Robert Parsons Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 I am new to bass fishing. I went to a lake this morning, and threw four different color of spinner baits, three different color of worms, and two different color of jigs. Mostly fished around Cypress trees in narrow canals, some deep, some shallow. Not a bite. Any suggestions? Quote
Super User deep Posted March 13, 2011 Super User Posted March 13, 2011 Pretty much what I've been doing over the last few weeks. At least you didn't lose over $70 in lures. I'm sure I'll stick a big one the next trip though. Hang in there, you'll get a bunch of good suggestions. Quote
Super User Sam Posted March 13, 2011 Super User Posted March 13, 2011 You are a Tulane fan and therefore you will never catch anything!!! OK, you are a bass fisherman so you are probably an LSU fan which makes you an OK guy. Here are some questions to consider as to why you did not catch anything: 1. Did a cold front move through the area yesterday? 2. What was the water temperature? 3. Bank fishing or from a boat? 4. Any structure you can throw to? 5. Are the bass bedding? 6. Was there any current? 7. Was the water clear, stained or muddy? 8. If clear skies, any docks or piers to fish? 9. If a cloudy day, any stickups or down trees you can fish? 10. When the bass ignored one presentation did you change it up meaning did you reel faster; reel slower; jerk the bait; stop and go; etc.? 11. Did you change colors of your baits? 12. Are the crawfish out and moving around? Did you take your net and scoop up some to bring home for dinner? So many variables as to why you did not catch anything. Don't fret over this. It happens to all of us. Just keep trying. By the way, did you throw a shad colored crankbait? A lipless crankbait? A Chatterbait? I would think that this time of year Louisiana bass would like to see moving baits in lieu of bottom plastics and jigs. Now, the next time you go out you have to say "Geaux Tigers" on every cast or you will get skunked again. ;D ;D ;D Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted March 13, 2011 Super User Posted March 13, 2011 Every bass fisherman get's skunked every once in a while, you're just the only one who admits it ;D. Like Sam said, many variables to consider. Try a weightless Senko next you're getting skunked. If that don't work, then try turning your hat around backward, put a 1/8 ounce worm weight in your right front pocket, hang a green worm from your back pocket, tie a pink scarf to your ankle and sing Mary Had a Little Lamb. Super User SirSnookalot Posted March 13, 2011 Super User Posted March 13, 2011 I haven't caught a decent bass in a week, they have turned off for me, just the way it goes. Quote
BadBassWV Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 I've been three times and skunked everytime so far. Water temps have been in the 45 to 48 degree range. Water is also muddy. I've thrown everything but nothing. I think I just haven't found the active fish, Doesn't matter, still better than not getting to fish. I'm going again tommorrow, before I launch I'm going to walk once around the boat forward then twice around the boat backwards I think that should work. LOL Quote
SausageFingers23 Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 If that don't work, then try turning your hat around backward, put a 1/8 ounce worm weight in your right front pocket, hang a green worm from your back pocket, tie a pink scarf to your ankle and sing Mary Had a Little Lamb. Works every time for me. Though sometimes I have to downsize with a 1/16 tungsten bullet weight. Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted March 13, 2011 Super User Posted March 13, 2011 This is the reason they call it fishing and not catching. Quote
GLADES Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 Try getting preoccupied with the tackle box or cell phone, it usually brings on the strike. Seriously, just try to slow down and enjoy your time outdoors. Quote
Big-O Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 Might concentrate on the cypress that are shallow and nearest to the drops or deeper water, and specifically on points or possible bends in the canal. Then SLOW down and "be the bait"... Keeping confidence that there are fish there and regularly looking at your offering. I think many fish strike after seeing or feeling a baits life like action from the fall or hop then seeing it sit still for an extended moment or minimal movement in the same place. Not all strikes are from pure fast reaction... but many are from a fish that stalks or sneaks in for the meal or kill shot. We all like the quick movement reaction bites but sometime we need to lure or finesse the fish into eating Big O www.ragetail.com Quote

Robert Parsons Posted March 14, 2011 Author Posted March 14, 2011 Went back to the same spot yesterday, using my new fish finder. The fish were at 3-5ft, in a water depth of 8-10ft. The only lure getting hits was a bream colored lipless crank bait. Never caught a fish, just light strikes. I stepped down to a 1/4oz silver crankbait and got nothing. I didn't have a 1/4oz bream colored lipless crank bait. It may have been gar and catfish that the sonar was picking up, I don't know. The day was not a total loss. We did catch 11 crappie with shiners. Thanks for the advice. RP Quote
