Landed my first frog bass while fishing in Hammond, IN. I didn't have the right equipment with me but figured I would try the frog in the slop along the shore since provided plenty of cover and shade as the temps are close to 85 degrees out. I was using a Cabelas XML 6'6" Rig&Jig spinning rod with a Quantum Kinetic reel with Cajun Advantage 8# test and a Dean Rojas Bronzeye frog in Rainforest Black. After several cast and finally getting one right where I wanted and bringing it back along the shore she hit and remembered to wait a few seconds before setting the hook. I did and she took plenty of drag before I got her in as she put up a good fight. Next time I'll have the baitcaster and braid but glad I remembered what I read on the board about the hookset and making sure the fish has it before you set the hook.

Grats! Actually got my first frog bass today as well. Mine hit it in a lake with no grass or anything. I brought it across the creekbed, he hit it once and missed so I flipped it back over and got him. I was using a spro bronzeye tree frog color.

Congrats bro! I love throwing a frog and you're pretty brave doing it with 8# test!!

Very true the 8# test was a big risk so next time it will be a baitcaster and 30# test braid or higher

I use the same rod/reel set up for frogging and jigging.  It's an old Heavy action 7'6" lightning rod with a Quantum Energy PT and 65lb power pro.  I try to throw into the nastiest stuff I can find.  And I don't want to lose anything, even the stumps I get hung on, lol.

Fishing calculator for a 20" bass puts her at 4.5lbs which would be my New PB..... :D :D :D

Great fish! I caught my first 3 bass on frogs this weekend too. I was right near you in Lake Sataion, and in Crown point. The grass is thick around NWI, so frogs have been something I have wanted to try. I was using the YUM frogs on a 3/0 EWG hook. The bright green/Dark Green ones work real well for some reason up here.

Grats again on your fish! Oh, btw, that fish was huge compared to the ones I got. All 3 were under 15in".

Thanks and Congrats on your catches as well. Yeah the grass is thick in NWI this time of year and just decided to try the frog even though it was on light line and took a minute to land her. Congrats again and I plan on fishing the area more often now.

Thanks for all the congrats guys and shortly after catching the fish I lost the Spro frog to a tree hanging out of the water. Luckily Cabelas isn't too far from my house and I replaced it along with having 30# Test 10# Power Pro Braid added to the setup just in case I want to try the frog again.

My first frog fish was a frightful experience. I literally had on an ultralight setup and 4 lb test throwing frogs into pads. Caught a few, but strikes scared the living daylights out of me and the fact that I had no idea what I was doing.
