JacobK Posted April 19, 2010 Posted April 19, 2010 Took a road trip down to Mogadore, Ohio to fish for the weekend since Michigan's season opener isn't for another week. On the first day (Saturday) the air temperature was in the low 30's to high 20's and the water temperature was around 65. We saw a lot of small males up close to shore and marked a bunch of females on and around drop offs. We didn't do to well on Saturday, it was extremely difficult to travel anywhere because the lake is electric only and battling 25mph winds with a 30lb thrust trolling motor is ridiculous. ;D ;D A few times throughout the day it started to snow and actually hail a little but we toughed it out and managed 8 fish the best two weighing in at 2.6lbs and 2.5lbs. All of my fish were caught yo-yoing a 1/2 oz sinking Sebile Flatt Shad in Green Halo. Sunday morning we launched at 7am. The air temperature was about the same as Saturday and so was the water temp. The only difference is it was extremely calm with no wind. We positioned our boat in front of a nice 5ft drop off we had marked the previous day and I made a couple extremely long casts past it almost to the shore line. I was yo-yoing a Sebile Flatt Shad in Green Halo, the same lure that caught me all of my bass the previous day. On the 3rd or 4th cast I was letting the Flatt Shad flutter down and as I went to lift it up again I felt tension, reeled in what little slack there was and leaned into a nice soft sweeping hookset and the fight was on! The fish cooperated and started making its way to the boat slowly. As it got closer I felt it making an attempt to jump so I put more pressure on it so it couldn't go airborne and spit my lure. As it got closer I decided to swing it onto the boat. Just when it broke the surface my fishing partner yelled ITS A MONSTER! Thats when I realized this could just possibly be my new PB and just as it made it past the hull she shook her head and the hook came undone and she fell floppin all over the deck. I dropped my rod and carefully lipped her and placed her on the scale, the scale shot up to 5.4lbs and then slowly trickled back down to 5.1 where it stayed. Then I snapped a quick picture and off she went. It still hasn't set in yet that I've officially joined the 5lb club. Here in Southeast Michigan a 5lb LMB is quite uncommon so please excuse my excitement over a measly 5lber. ;D This totally made up for freezing my butt off in the cold for 2 days. anyways pictures speak a thousand words ya go. Super User Dwight Hottle Posted April 19, 2010 Super User Posted April 19, 2010 WTG JacobK. That is a real nice bass for magadore. I fished there a little when I was a teenager & broke 5lbs as well. You definitely caught a trophy! Quote
bassman31783 Posted April 19, 2010 Posted April 19, 2010 I live in Texas where catching a 5lber is very common. With that being said, I would be excited to catch that thing. What a pig. That's one of the best looking 5lbers I've seen in a loooong time. Congrats. Beautiful fish. Quote
Super User Bassin_Fin@tic Posted April 19, 2010 Super User Posted April 19, 2010 Hell of a nice fish from Moggie.Congrats are in order man. One of my largest Ohio bass came from that place as well. Right around 5lbs out of one of the scum/pad covered shallow coves on a hollow frog maybe 15 yrs ago in summer. Wonder if the picture is still on the wall in the registration office? Just to let you know right around end of april and may the spinnerbait bite can get really insane out on the milfoil flats in that lake too. Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted April 19, 2010 Super User Posted April 19, 2010 Nice bass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Quote

Super User Paul Roberts Posted April 19, 2010 Super User Posted April 19, 2010 JacobK, Great post! Love the details. Puts me in the boat with you, while I sit at my desk. Thank you. There is nothing "measly" about a true 5lb northern bass. Congrats. That's a BIG one. Beautiful fish too. Man, I just ooh and ahh over them. Then I let them go and still oooh and ahh and think, what was that thing?? I used to kill them as if I could hold onto that somehow, but that didn't capture that beauty any better. So... I try to go catch another one and start oohing and ahhing all over again lol. Congrats! That's bass fishing! BTW: I really like that FlattShad (in Holo Green too) -same retrieve has been catching for me too. Quote

Super User Paul Roberts Posted April 19, 2010 Super User Posted April 19, 2010 I like the angle of the camera lens to the fish. Pretty accurate shot -that's tough to do. Drop down a few inches and you could have called that a 7, and got away with it LOL. Quote
