Btech Posted December 17, 2008 Posted December 17, 2008 Hey i was told a Jig would work the best for the cold wether out here in NC - but was told to use a PORK TRAILOR to match in color. Can someone elaborate on this? First of all what jig should i use and second what is a trailor? and what is pork? (I know they arent refering to baccon) . Thanks PS if anyone has a pic of one riged this way it might help. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted December 17, 2008 Super User Posted December 17, 2008 http://www.unclejosh.com/unclejosh/modules/cart/ That they are better for cold water is a myth. I use them and plastic trailers in any temp. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted December 17, 2008 Super User Posted December 17, 2008 Joe.S wrote a nice piece on fishing a jig: http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1189609782 If you spend some time reading through "Fishing Articles" at the top of the page, I think you will be surprised at how extensive our library has become. There are several covering all aspects of jig fishing. 8-) Quote
Super User senile1 Posted December 17, 2008 Super User Posted December 17, 2008 I used to be one of those who thought that pork trailers were better in the Winter because they were more pliable in the colder temperatures, but plastics have come a long way over the years. The plastic trailers that I use are very pliable, even in the Winter, and they are more user friendly than pork. Quote

I've never had a bag of trailers fly open and juice go all over like I have when I used to use pork baits. Quote
Btech Posted December 17, 2008 Author Posted December 17, 2008 Thanks RW that helped out alot i have read just about everything in the library (Which your right is EXCELENT) however am still a little confused on the " Trailor " If i use a jig with a weed guard and skirting lets say brown with white flakes, would i put a brown zoom worm on the hook as well? This to me doesnt seem to follow what people are saying about adding a trailor makes the jig fall slower... or are trailors somthing i dont know about that are sold at BPS for this purpose only.. Thanks for your help - And sorry im so slow. Quote

I never liked the extra work involved in making sure the hole was big enough to pull them off the hook. Otherwise, you would waste even more time trying to remove them. Quote

Probably not a worm, most guys use a chunk (pictured in J Francho's link), a creature bait or craw. I prefer the GYCB Flappin' Hog or NetBaits Baby Paca Craw. The trailer increases the surface are of the presentation which slows the fall. Howerver, I catch 99% of my bass on or just off the bottom, so the rate of fall in not very important to me. 8-) Quote

Super User Munkin Posted December 18, 2008 Super User Posted December 18, 2008 For the cold water I use hare jigs most of the time. Fish are sluggish so I use 1/8oz black with either a uncle josh 101 black pork chunk or a zoom tiny chunk in solid black. I just ordered 3 dozen of these because they look so good for winter fishing. With hare jigs I only use a trailer about half the time anyway. http://jibblers.com/BassJigs3.htm#Custom%20Fox%20Hair%20Series Allen Quote
fathom Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 i use a zoom super chunk jr. 99% of the time am fishing a jig...either i'm that good or the fish are that dumb. and i'm kinda leaning toward the latter. Quote
