I haven't been fishing as much as I would like because its been so d..m hot down here that its not enjoyable after about 10:30 AM. Nevertheless, my buddy convinced me to go out to Fellsmere and fish last Thursday. He was still high on catching an 8-12 and wanted to see if he could hook into an aggressive prespawner. We arrived there a bit late, 8:00 AM, but since it was pre time change we only missed Sunrise by 30 or so minutes. I started throwing the old faithful Spro Popper parallel to the bank as we trolled to the main lake and caught a couple of dinks. As we reached a long canal stretch I positioned the jon boat in the middle of the canal so we could cast into the reeds and bring old kermit out from the reeds.

My third fish of the day was a WHOOPER! I paused the popping frog about 3 feet from the bank and a vortex opened up underneath the plastic amphibian. As I set the hook on my heavy action Loomis I could tell that I either caught Mr. Mudfish, they tend to hang out in the particular area or Bertha. My first words to my partner were "I can't STOP'em." I thought I might have forgotten to tighten the drag on my black and yellow Revo, but that wasn't the case since I did that as we were loading. So for about 10 turns of the handle all I could manage was to keep the fish about a foot away from the thick reed jungle. She finally turned and swam parallel to the bank towards the stern and we stared at the white of her massive belly! At that point my buddy knew I had a big sow on and reeled his lure in quickly. As I brought her closer I could see feel that anxious feeling you get building "No, don't touch the line!" I muttered to my fishless buddy as he reached for the Samurai braid, she flounder a bit too far for my comfort. I turned the power handle a couple of more times and swept her close enough that Brett's ready hands could grab her jutting jaw. After giving each other high fives we settled down and weighed her. My digital scale fluctuated between 8-14 and 9-2 before finally settling at 9-0!

The rest of the day turned out to be a scorcher, but nevertheless we found a pattern on the main lake of fishing road beds with rattle traps and senkos. I landed 10 more and Brett surpassed my total by 3! Life is good ;D!
