Triton21 Posted April 3, 2009 Posted April 3, 2009 Guys to add to the problems - My boat is not working right - Is there anyone going who knows how to adjust throttle and shift cables on a Electric start 20 HP mercury ??? I have checked all the marinas i could but they are all out by 2 weeks - Id be mor than willing to pay you. Please PM me if you can - As this is my deciding factor to bring hte boat or not. Do you have a manual? Try looking online for a manual and I'm sure there are enough of us that we can figure it out! If I can fix it you won't owe me anything. Maybe we can get Cart7 to look over my shoulder and point. Kelley Quote

I'm afraid my advice may only lead to a you tube worthy video. Quote
Super User CWB Posted April 3, 2009 Super User Posted April 3, 2009 Don't let that stop you from coming. There will be enough of us Know It Alls there to help you out. In all my years of owning a boat I have never had a problem I couldn't figure out. Boats are relatively simple compared to cars, especially older ones. The manual would help but I believe it is one of 2 ways. Remove the cables from the motor and either screw in or unscrew the connectors. The is also adjustment at the shift control. What exactly is the problem you are having? Try calling direct. I have also gotten help that way. http://www.mercurymarine.com/utility/contact/index.php Quote
Btech Posted April 3, 2009 Posted April 3, 2009 Sorry to take this off subject (My own at that) but DARN CART That Avitar is FREAKIN FUNNY! Probably the funniest thing i have seen on the web lol. I dont know why lol. I cant stop laughing, He is on 480 pushups. Quote
Super User CWB Posted April 3, 2009 Super User Posted April 3, 2009 funny you say that about youtube videos. There could be one showing you exactly how to do this. (not sure, but could be) I learned how to properly repair the peak of my roof on you tube; just never know what's on there. b Maybe even a video of Tennessee volunteers walking to the Alamo instead of riding horses. Sorry - Couldn't resist! :D Man, I'm starting to have fun already! Quote
Btech Posted April 3, 2009 Posted April 3, 2009 I checked - They got one but its not the same style engine as mine. Also seen a piston blow thrugh the top of a merc lol was kinda funny (Knock on wood... NOT THE CYLINDER WALLS) JK Quote

IdahoLunkerHunter Posted April 3, 2009 Posted April 3, 2009 Btech, Here is a preview Manual I don't know if your engine falls in this category but it has enough info that would get us started. Look at pages 121-150. http://books.google.com/books?id=U3j8tgmmPFcC&pg=PA651&lpg=PA651&dq=Adjust+throttle+20+HP+mercury&source=bl&ots=QhdsAzhmD1&sig=Bq39-lFiTLM3TGamh5l7Ug2A8_g&hl=en&ei=dknWSe2pGpeEtAO8opCiCg&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=2#PPP5,M1 Quote
Super User burleytog Posted April 3, 2009 Super User Posted April 3, 2009 I think the packing is done. Still gotta change the line on one reel. I think I did pretty well as I've only got about 25 lbs. of plastics. ;D Made one final trip to Dick's yesterday, kind of proud of myself as I didn't spend nearly as much this year as I did last year before I went to Guntersville. Adjustment is relatively easy assuming nothing is frozen: adjustment is made by turning the clevis in or out on the threaded rod to desired location. Throttle should be adjusted to low point and shift to neutral. Idle should be 500-700 rpm which is adjusted with a set screw. Quote
Btech Posted April 3, 2009 Posted April 3, 2009 Let me also add to the info that on my shifter (Whatever ya callit) I cant find a neutural position the prop spins FAST to the right or FAst to the left Quote

Use your own judgement on bringing your boat. Maybe Greg's guy can fix it if we can't find the problem. Kelley Quote
