BassNub Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 i would say from my experience the best time to use top water poppers is when the bass are chasing bait fish or when you see schools of shiners swimming or just breaking the surface, this usually works best for me Quote
gobig Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 Last weekend. Had a club turny and big fish came on a popper. Quote
BassinSoldier Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 In reply to your popper question, assuming your level of experience I would say throw a popper early morning and in the evening when its warm out. In reply to your question as to why your post was moved here, read this: http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?virboard=gen_bass;num=1133375680 Welcome to the forum, but try to get it right dude! Snapper G 2.0 could cause problems. Quote
Super User Tin Posted December 11, 2008 Super User Posted December 11, 2008 Post-spawn is prime time. Quote
Bronzefly Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 hot summer nights can be fun with poppers, too! Quote
Super User CWB Posted December 11, 2008 Super User Posted December 11, 2008 First or last light are prime time but you can nail 'em anytime conditions are right. Keep one rigged for when you come across a school chasing bait on top. You never have the right lure tied on when you stumble on this and the bite is usually over by the time you rig up! Quote
senko_77 Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 Hopefully Randall will post a reply to this thread. He's taught me everything I know about them. They will catch fish from post spawn all the way through late fall. What Randall has taught me most is how effective they are in the dead of summer. They have to be fished fast, and if you can find the right right cadence, it will draw huge reaction strikes. Quote

gobig Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 Senko's right poppers are most deadly in the summer but can be fished all most year round. My first post was true the big fish did come on a popper along with 11 others that day. The bait was fished fast in the flats over weed beds in 4-8 ft of water. It was foggy and the water temp was 57-60 deg. Kinda warm for this late in the season. I never saw a bait fish break the water. The shad were on the finder in 25-35 ft of water. I just wish it was me that found the bite. I love top water. It was another member of the club who's partner did not show, so he fished for big fish. His best 5 fish put him in 4th place over all in a team event. Quote
zbass Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 I usually don't throw them until post spawn. The conventional wisdom says early and late in the day. That is very true. I'm not gonna tell you that they work in the middle of the day when it is bright and sunny. I'm not gonna tell you that they work when you work them as fast as you can with small pauses. I'm not gonna tell you that they work almost sitting still. point is, THEY WORK! Quote
