jbmaine Posted May 20, 2009 Posted May 20, 2009 Hi all, Since getting laid off three weeks ago my wife and I have had the chance to spend more time out on the water and I thought I'd share how we are doing. we live in the Kittery area so have been hitting waters around here. Mousam lake- have fished this several times. A couple of weeks ago the water had hit 60 degrees and we started to see fish around the beds but with the cold weather the temp dropped back down to 57 and the fish disappeared. Yesterday the water was back up to 60-64 and we started to see a few fish. Only got three in the boat ( a slow day for us ) but one was a decent 2 1/2 lb SM. Caught it on a tube, the other two on a jitterbug. Square pond- Fished this for the first time last Friday. Water temp 58. Saw quite a few beds. Due to the wind we had a hard time fishing. We only have a small boat with no trolling motor so had to keep throwing the anchor out to stay put. We didn't pull any into the boat but a friend of mine was up there and got three or four. We are thinking of hitting it again in a couple of days. Side note- this is the worst black fly season I have ever seen. usually we only bothered by them along the shore line but this year they find us out in the middle of the lake. If anyone is interested I'll keep you updated on how we do, if you'd like to share how your doing, feel free and if you see a 14ft green lund WC deluxe with a 20 horse honda out on the water it's probably us. free free to swing by and say Hi. Good fishing JB Quote

infiltwb Posted May 28, 2009 Posted May 28, 2009 I hear things are kickin pretty hard around naples, long lake and brady pond, and of course sebago. My mom and stepfather are in that area. Quote
jbmaine Posted May 28, 2009 Author Posted May 28, 2009 Got out a few times this last week. Mousam lake-- Hit it twice. water temp 60-64. This is a lake we have been fishing for years and usually do very well. However this year it's been tough fishing. have to work really hard to pick up fish. Saw some beds but no fish on them. still it was fun. Square pond-- Hit this on Tuesday and had a perfect day. air and water temp both in the low sixties. low wind and few boats. only two other boats and myself on a 900 acre lake. Also had fun watching a sea plane practice takeoff and landings. Fishing was great. Got dialed in right away on what was working and caught SM all day. Nothing over 3 lb but tons of fun. Here's a few pics. Anyone else fishing up this way? I'd love to hear how your doing. JB Quote
jbmaine Posted June 6, 2009 Author Posted June 6, 2009 Hi all, Hit Mousam lake again yesterday and did well. fished a couple of coves that had SM beds. It seems the spawn is over as there was no fish on them but we caught several nice ones randomly casting a senko in the coves. Also hit the shallow water for LM. Again, no fish on the beds but picked up a couple in the area randomly casting. Water temp was 65-68. We are going to hit it again on Monday. Any one else on here fishing these waters or am I the only one? JB Quote
jbmaine Posted June 11, 2009 Author Posted June 11, 2009 Hi all, Spent a few hours out on mousam this week. Instead of the fishing picking up it seems to be slowing down. The SM seem to be starting to head back into deeper water. Only caught two, both at about 10 ft depth. Hit the shallower parts of the lake for LM and got zip. Have fished this lake for years and have never seen the LM fishing so slow. I'm beginning to wonder if the fish in this lake are on a decline. I started this post hoping to find some more fisherman in the area to compare notes with, something like the NH guys are doing. A Lot of people have read this but input has been minimal at best. It hardly seems worth the bother to continue. JB Quote
Bass-1 Posted June 11, 2009 Posted June 11, 2009 Myself and some friends from Conn. and R.I. just finished a one week trip to southern Maine around the little Sebago area. We fished about 16 different bodies of water with 6 boats, and by weeks end, most boats averaged 300+ fish. The majority was smallmouth with several nice largemouth mixed in. Biggest l/m were 6.4,5.2 and 5 with a few in the 3-4 range and smallies were 5.5, 5.2 and several 3-4's. Because of the mixed up weather we had this spring, fish were in a 3 stages of pre-spawn, spawn and post-spawn. We found both smallies and l/m activly spawing right in the middle of the day and also lots of empty beds. Water temps ranged from 62-72. A normal year with the group would average about 500 fish for the week, so it was good, but not great. Quote
royce Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 JB, I am from Florida and have come up to Visit a good friend who lives on Square Pond. I fished the whole week of June 6 through June 13th. I caught 20 -30 Smallmouth and some Largemouths each morning. About 3 hrs on average. Caught most of them on small Rapalas. A few on Jitterbugs but the rapalas were working a little better. I love it up there in the summer. Wish I owned a place up there. Maybe someday,,,, Royce Quote

I love being able to see the bottom 8-10 ft down. I assume you were fishing the shore line? I've caught some nice SM there but so far have not hooked a LM. JB Quote
royce Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 JB, you are correct in most of my fishing time was shoreline casting. I caught the all the largemouths around submerged trees. No real biggies but a few LMs in the 3 lb class. I was limited in my fishing due to me using a canoe. Quote
bulldoggeklein Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 I went out to mousam with my brother this morning before the rain hit. We fished from shore at the spillway and I got a nice LM five and half pounder my brother hit a LM three pounder yesterday. We got seven largemouths yesterday with his being the largest but I cut him back down to size today with my big one. Only two fish this morning though but it is ok when one is over 5 pounds. good luck and rod benders. Quote
Steve_in_Maine Posted September 28, 2009 Posted September 28, 2009 Great East Lake is also a great SM source, crystal clear water with a rocky bottom. Went there about a month ago, had a good day with all Smallies on tubes. Little Sebago about 3 weeks ago, got quite a few SM and a few LM. Most of them coming on tubes again. Arrowhead and Ossipee are also great places to go........LM and SM on varied lures. Heading to Ossipee in the morning............hoping for some hungry fish getting ready for winter. Steve Quote
