I used to not be into pitching but I got into it alot more when I started using small jigs. Whenever I tried standard jigs I had little success. The lakes I fish are mostly small, pressured, clearer, and have little cover. I tried some bitsy bugs one day and wore them out. I dont use bitsy bugs anymore the hooks rust easy and skirts band melt easy and fall off and you cant replace that small skirt. Now I use the little terminator jigs instead. I like a 4in lizard with the head cut off or a small plastic trailor. I still catch alot of big fish I think catching big fish has to do more with the quite presentation and fishing tight to cover than using a big bait. The problem is these baits are light so you lose some accuracy and they dont work in thick brush or grass but I dont fish any thick stuff back home. I pitch usually with a G.Loomis IMX 7'6h rod or a castaway 7'6mh bud pruitt sig series rod with a calcutta reel and 15 florocarbon. I do like puching grass with a 1oz weight and sweet beaver occasionally and if I am fishing guntersville I go with a bigger bait but usually this is what I throw. If your not fishing heavy cover I suggest this setup. I think your better off adjusting your lure weight to thickness of cover your fishing than just throwing big stuff all the time. Depth also matters and you must adjust weight for that as well.

I stand near the edge of the boat.

I put on a Senko rigged Texas or Wacky or go with a Shaky Head. Zoom Finesse worms are also a good choice.

I flip and pitch out of the boat to the shore or to a stickup or a tree or bush, etc. with my Curado baitcaster using 12 pound flouro line on a 6'6" or 7'6" rod.

I do more pitching than flipping, but I do both.

I get as close to the shore, stickup, tree, wood, bush, dock, pier, moored boat, leaves, grass, pads, etc. as I can with the bait.

I am always on the lookout for snakes, too.  ;)

I always:

Pitch with a 7' 0" MH BassPro Extreme rod

a Revo SX with 30 lb. Sufix Braided Line

a Chigger Craw- Black/Blue Flake or Black/Red Flake

a 2/0 Gama G-Lock worm hook with a 3/8 oz. tungsten bullet weight, pegged

Pitch in grass, rocks, weeds, gravel, pads, logs, laydowns, brush, docks, stumps, mats, reeds, and banks.

Isn't it funny how different we all are?! 95% of the time I pitch (I rarely flip) with a Dobyns 765 (7' 6" rod in 5 power) coupled with 65 lb braid, and typically tied to a 25 lb mono leader. I love the power of braid but hate how visible it is... the mono reduces that visibility and gives me enough stretch. Short range I tend to explode flourocarbon but the mono will hold. Anyway, I couple all that with a www.dirtyjigstackle.com 3/4 oz pitchin' jig and almost always in "molting craw" and a standard size beaver trailer. This rig has produced more 7lb plus bass for me than anything else (but swimbaiting of course) and is incredibly consistant throughout the year! Of course I do adapt it depending on what clarity and the particular body of water but that is my stand-by setup for pitchin'.

What about yalls favorite soft plastic to flip grass with? I personally like netbait paca craws, or brush hogs. I hear a lot of people flipping tubes, but I have never tried it out.

Forget flipping and pitching and just learn how to skip the jigs and t-rigs that are pegged. Sometimes flipping will still be needed for some applications but skipping under obstacles instead of over will make getting the fish out easier, and you have much more control of the situation.

I go with a 7'3" MH Carrot for most applications with a high-speed revo and either 17 pound Trilene 100%(for lighter cover) or 65 pound Power Pro for the nasty stuff. If using a t-rig I like just big worm hooks, no wide-gaps.

The only advice I have is to use mono over Fluoro if you are going to use heavier line sizes.  Fluoro will make it hard to flip because of the memory in the heavier tests, i wouldn't go over 12 but thats just me.

Last year I had 17 lb Trilene 100% and thought my reel needed to be cleaned but it didn't  I put on 17 lb mono and was flipping without any problems.

Skeeterman, i use 14 lb Vanish on my jig rod, but i use 50lb power pro for heavy cover. I have never had any problems pitching or flipping with the vanish though. In fact it casts pretty darn well.

I also used 12lb and it was amazing but the 17lb was a nightmare.  Sounds like 14lb is more like the 12 than the 17.  Thanks for the info.

Paca Craws are good in close quarters but I like the gliding action of a sweet beaver better. Tubes and Beaver type baits are actually very similar in action (both glide). It comes down to what do want a gliding action (tubes, beavers) or a flapping swimming action (paca craws, brush hogs, ect.).

I use 20lb vanish flouro and 20lb yo-zuri hybrid.  Both work great.

Favorite baits to pitch are t-rigged flappin hogs, kreatures, and jigs with flappin hog trailers.
