Water level rose high enough where I could get the boat through the channel into the East lake. Had to jump out and push but it was worth it. Fri night got 3 decent fish before it got too dark. Sat morn. was cold, dark and windy. Fish didn't seem to mind. Started throwing the Rage Shad around the pads and action was pretty much non stop. Went in around noon and took a nap. My dad came up around 3:00 and we went out about 5:00. Started off with a little guy and then started getting huge hits and misses. I blamed the old man and called him a jinx. Next cast another huge boil and a miss. I looked down and there was a huge dogfish. Must have been what was missing the bait. A few minutes later I got this guy. Then right at dark I got another huge strike and got a good hookset. Got a quick glimpse and thought I finally got a hook into a big dogfish. Then I got it closer and saw it was a bass! It actually pulled some drag. Got it in and measured and weighed it. 21". 6lb.7 oz. After a few pics, back she went. Guess the old man was actually a good luck charm! All but one fish on Rage Shads. Super User CWB Posted September 1, 2009 Author Super User Posted September 1, 2009 I switched from a 5/0 to a 4/0 Gammie superline EWG hook. My hookup percentage seems to have gone up. Could be coincidence though. I think Big-O recommended downsizing to increase hookups. I'm going to stay with a 4/0. Just texas rig it as normal, measure where hook would penetrate back of bait, and I push hook straight thru at 90 deg. to the body and skin hook the point. Make sure you keep the hook in the center of the bait. Tail up of course. Quote

Picture all those places you would love to throw a buzzbait but it would get hung up in the slop. That's where this bait shines. You can work it slow like a hollow body frog or fast like a buzzer. I'm getting to the point where it's my main bait. I know it's gonna get cold soon but I got one of my biggest bass last year on a frog the day I took my boat out for the year. Quote

Nice haul there CWB...crappier the weather the better for me...when it rains/storms...i'm right in it and always nail a bunch...those steady warm summer rains here, when there is no lightning etc...oh man thats heaven fishin to me 8-) I couldn't agree more hide pounder! I keep daily logs of conditions,lures used fish caught,etc. Give me the nasty weather any day for numbers and size of bass. CWB, first off, Stooge fan- gotta love it. Second, those are beautiful photos. Third, other than your lunker, the fish seemed underfed. Looks like my home lake bass where there are no shad,craws or minnows. the bass can dine on white or yellow perch and various sunfish Quote
Super User CWB Posted September 4, 2009 Author Super User Posted September 4, 2009 Stooges forever! Bluegill and perch are the main forage base. Usually fish are pretty chunky. Camera angle isn't best either, holding them out at arms length and taking a picture doesn't do them much justice. They were obviously hungry though. Holding them horizontally would have shown they were a tad more stout. Like they guy that caught them Quote
looking4structure Posted September 12, 2009 Posted September 12, 2009 Nice fish.That Rage Tail Shade has become my favorite top water bait as well, specially in alot of slop.Buzzbaits catch too much slop and after every cast you have to remove it.The Rage you can get more casts in when the top water bite is on because you don't have to pull slop from it.Way to go.You really hammered them.
