little_stephen Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 ok, i recently started fishig a local resv. its electric only, and ive been renting a canoe. so, im limitedto my four rod carry rack. because i travel ready 2 switch styles im trying to solve a riddle! This is the first placeive been that has shad! I was fishing shoreline structure whn i noticed this group of gulls diving at the surface. all my hard work & studying paid offwhen i realized they were feeding on a shad school! by the time i rowed there, the frenzy was over. but my question is this. What one kind of and what specific bait is going to be best to keep on to be ready forthis opportunity? I prefer plastics, but ill try just about anything! So whats your take on this? what should i keep tied on for this situation? Quote
TommyBass Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 If your fishing a school like you mentioned and prefer plastics I would use something like a Zoom Fluke in the color of the type of shad you mentioned. Top water something like a spook is good. Rattle traps work good as well since you can easily control them to whatever depth you need. If you want to get real crazy through a hard jerk bait, but Ive never liked those for some reason. Quote
BrentD Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 Either a Fluke or some type of tail spinner will do really good like a Swarming Hornet or School Girl rigged with a Fluke Jr. or Little Dipper behind it Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted December 1, 2008 Super User Posted December 1, 2008 I think you might be better off with a lure which maximizes your casting distance: 5/8 oz XCalibur Xr50 would be my suggestion. White or silver would seem to be the logical choice, but I have much better luck with chrome blue, orange belly: http://www.excaliburlures.com/rattle.asp 8-) Quote
rboat Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 A great shad bait that works well and is cheap is a lead head with a curly tail grub in white or gray. Give it a try. Quote
Super User Chris at Tech Posted December 1, 2008 Super User Posted December 1, 2008 You have some options here Zara Spook Lucky Craft Pointer Fish Head Spin Rattle Trap Fluke Senko Spinnerbait Quote
little_stephen Posted December 4, 2008 Author Posted December 4, 2008 so far common sense has me stocked up with flukes. mostlywhite, silver, things like that. i was thinking topwater popper. im not at all comfrtable with zara spooks. im notgood with the whole side 2 sidewalking tech. rattle traps aresomething else i was thinkng because of the depth control issue. which realy ifu think about it isnt an issue. because i have no electronics so i have no knowledge of thefishs depth. thts why im thinking my buckeyelures su spin with a fluke on th backend? Stringjam Posted December 4, 2008 Posted December 4, 2008 When bass are feeding on schools like that they'll hit a beer can - - the most important thing you need to consider is what bait you can actually get to them the fastest (castability - - as Roadwarrior mentioned). Lipless crank and Spook both sling like rocks. If you aren't comfortable with Spooks, spend enough time with them to get comfortable. Believe me (and everybody else)......they're WORTH it. Quote
little_stephen Posted December 9, 2008 Author Posted December 9, 2008 to the above mentioned trolling motor comment. Im broke. and the marina dsnt rent them. plus i like the workout of rowing. helps me get in my cardio while i enjoy my fishing..... and actually to the sling like rockets comment. Ive got my rocket slinging down just fine...... just kidding. Ive got my favorite baitcaster dialed in and its my best friend when im on the water. I can chuck baits further than i thought i could. but youre right in this situation..... the first thing i can get into firing range probly is the best idea. i can do the lipless plugs! theyre so freaking simple. I guess id better start doing my research on how to walk the spooks. and ive never really been able to cast them that far...... how would a spoon work in that situation?! Quote
noway Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 How to walk the dog. This video helped me a bunch. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XULwIPF43mY Quote
