GonzoFishing Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 Not really sure if this is the right spot for this post but I figured the forum would enjoy the pics. I went out Saturday morning to an Everglades canal hoping to catch a couple of decent fish. No luck >! Did manage to run across a dead anaconda ! You can sort of gauge the size by comparing my brothers boots. He's a size 10! The State is trying to eradicate the snakes since they are an invasive species. Dont think its going to work if you ask me ;D. I've already seen a few babies and these things dont have any known predators. Quote
mrlitetackle Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 man, i hate snakes....... that thing would freak me out if i came across it and it were still alive. Quote
BassinSoldier Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 That's a burmese python, not an anaconda. I do know that the burmese python has been a problem down in the southern part of the state though. Are the monitor lizards bad where you live, too? It's unfortunate that so many people are letting their exotic pets go down there in the glades!!! Quote

I have heard that the monitor lizards are a problem too but so far I havent seen any. Not that I'm all deep in the Glades so for all I know they're are all over the place too. I know the iguanas are! The snake in the pic was probably born in the Glades. Quote
LCpointerKILLA Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 west broward they are thriving... it my be too late to get rid of them. we all remember the gator explosion pic Quote
Krzkev Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 I live in South Palm Beach County FL, and the iguana population is crazy here. I am guessing that is is worse down south of us. I have see other intrusive reptiles, like basalisk lizards and cuban anoles and spiny iguanas, there are allot of different types of intrusive reptiles here in florida. Just imagine walking out in your back yard and theres a 5 foot lizard sitting in a tree. Here ya go. Quote
BassDeaton01 Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 Yeah I saw something on the news a few weeks ago about how bad the burmese python problem in FL is becoming. Those things are huge!! Quote
tutle Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 Why are they a problem? Don't they just eat rabbits and stuff like that? Is it all a matter of herpetophobia ? When I see a snake I just see a wild animal; not the devil delivering apples of seduction or evil incarnate. I think the critter in the picture is pretty cool looking .It is a shame it is dead. Quote
Daniel My Brother Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 Why are they a problem? Don't they just eat rabbits and stuff like that? Is it all a matter of herpetophobia ? I can see where introducing a bunch of 20 foot snakes, that will eat almost anything, into an area with endangered species and a delicate ecological balance might be a bad idea. Quote
Matt Jungblut Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 that snake will go to about 20 feet a small child, large dog, that is what it would hunt not rabbits a big animal hunts big game so yes i would say letting your pet snake go is bad that lizard in the tree is dangerous 2 my brother had 1 that got to be about 6 foot i used to like that lizard held him all the time then 1 day i opened his cage and he jumped out on my chest like he normally does then he shot for my face and i moved and he got part of my ear i never went near that lizard again my brother and i have had many different reptiles growing up Quote
Super User Paul Roberts Posted August 11, 2009 Super User Posted August 11, 2009 I was in a village in Thailand where a 14 year old boy was eaten by a reticulated python. It lived under a shed and he'd tried to catch it as they will fetch some money in the pet trade. The guy that told me about it (we caught a small one together) said a large one can bite like a dog. And that if the snake's head is as big as your foot, it can swallow you. I also remember a news story of a reticulated in Florida that had lived under a trailer in a trailer park. They finally caught it and the pic showed about 6 men holding it -it was over 20feet long. A resident said that it "would eat raccoons like popcorn". Quote
paragon Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 I lived in Oklahoma when I was a kid. There i learned there are only a few snakes I dont like big ones, little ones, live ones, dead ones. Quote
