BassDeaton01 Posted July 27, 2009 Posted July 27, 2009 So I took my wife's little brother (11 yrs old) out bass fishing yesterday. The only type of fishing he has ever done is bobber for blue gill...which can be lots of fun. But he wanted to try out artificial bait and try to catch some bass. So I hooked him up with a rod that had a shaky head on it and told him to throw it out and showed him how to work the bait. I only explained once on how to set the hook and what to feel for before you set it. I started walking down the bank and I heard this very familiar splash coming from the water. He hooked one!! I was so happy I ran down there and picked his fish up. I told him to hold it so I could take his picture but he was scared to hold it for some reason. I'm taking him out again very soon. Any suggestions on how to get him to hold the fish and not be scared of it? By the way...here is a pic of it. It probably weighed close to two lbs. Probably a good 18-20 inch fish. Quote
Super User islandbass Posted July 27, 2009 Super User Posted July 27, 2009 well done, both of you! My daughter, who is 9 is fast becoming a bass catching machine, but she too for some reason is afraid to "lip" or hold them in anyway. I think all we can do is offer them to hold the fish until they feel comfortable to try. I think she thinks the teeth are sharp :-?, or perhaps it's the sliminess from the fish. Quote
Red Bear Posted July 27, 2009 Posted July 27, 2009 thats awesome. i took my 4 y/o niece fishing with me at a pond saturday. she was using night crawlers and caught her first bass. she wasnt afraid to touch it and wanted to hold it but was too scared to hold it as well. she was so excited to call her dad and tell him about it. he was skunked the last two times he fished that pond. taking kids fishing is a blast even if you dont get near as much fishing in yourself. its worth it to see their excitement. i even taught my niece how to cast a spinning reel Quote
Nkybassfisherman Posted July 27, 2009 Posted July 27, 2009 nice fish and congrats to you both but i do question the size?????? 2lbs and 18- 20 in i believe the two pounds but no way 18- 20 in most fish that big are around 3- 4 lbs Quote
BassDeaton01 Posted July 27, 2009 Author Posted July 27, 2009 Yeah I was eyeballing but it was close to that...skinny fish. Quote
MattinOK Posted July 27, 2009 Posted July 27, 2009 I have a simple method to teach a beginner how to lip a fish. Tell em' to lip em' and hold em' or they ain't goin' fishin' no mo'. Always works for me... ;D Quote

Lipped M Posted July 27, 2009 Posted July 27, 2009 Nice 1st Bass! As far as getting the l'il guys to hang on,what I do is show them the fishes mouth in detail, let them feel it for themselves, show them exactly where to put their fingers, how to push with their thumb to open mouth and place fingers around bottom lip(one motion). It usually doesn't take but a couple of outings for them to catch on.They stick with the smaller ones first and leave the bigger ones for you(hehe)but, they get it fairly quickly. Now pickeral, with their huge, enormous mouths and gigantic teeth for eating young boys......well thats different!
