skeetermike Posted July 19, 2009 Posted July 19, 2009 While camping on the lake we are setting some trotlines. We go out each evening to catch perch to bait with. Yesterday we found the big bream and ended up cleaning 60 late last night. This morning I went to run my lines then to out bass fishing hole that we barely got on before others began trying to fish it also. No big ones there, but we found the bream again. we left there and was on a mission to bream fish when we seen black bass and white bass schooling on bait fish along the way. We shut the motor down and my buddy opened up the rod box only to pull out a spinning pole with chug-bug and said theres another one in there with the same thing tied on. I pulled it out and the 1st cast hooked about a 2 lb black bass. When I got it in I began to take the hook out and the fish flopped throwing a 4/0 treble into my left little finger!!! Ouch! It was all the way to the bone. We ended up cutting the line and ever so gently unhooking the fish. Once the fish was released I fretted about what to do next short of an ER trip. In desperation I told my buddy to reach into my pocket and get out my knife. He began trying to cut it out with a dull knife without success. I finally just took the needle nose pliers and pulled really hard on the hook and it came out finally. :-X I made a trip to the ramp where my wife met me with 1st aid supplies and we ended up catching around 60 more bream. All i all I was pretty lucky. Had 3 cats, 2 white bass, 60 bream, and no ER trip. It was a good day only now I have a sore finger and hoping I don't get an infection. He said it was a new hook he had just put on the plug. Anyone got a hook in hand story similar to this one?? Quote
Big Mike in Fl Posted July 19, 2009 Posted July 19, 2009 I got one in the ear once, went into the meat, and didn't come back out, so we had to cut down into it with a razor knife (box cutter) to get it out, that wasn't fun. Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted July 19, 2009 Super User Posted July 19, 2009 Next time, hopefully there isn't one, use the string yank technique. It works, and works well. I've performed it, and had it performed on me. It is quick, and painless if done as directed. http://www.gofc.us/docs/MarineMedicineHook.pdf Quote
tutle Posted July 21, 2009 Posted July 21, 2009 Been there and done that. Good for you for not going the ER route. No one should ever go fishing with out something that will cut a hook shank and pliers for plucking.I have only had one that wouldn't pluck .I had to cut the shank and push the point out a new hole and then pull it on through. Stuff happens.A bottle of H2O2 should be in every vehicle and boat too.The first time It happened to me I tried the pull up on it and cut along it with the pocket knife until it pulls loose method.I don't recommend that route.I sharpened my knife when I got home. The next time I took the pliers and snatched hard . That works better but you want to make sure you get it the first time. :'( Quote

Super User Bankbeater Posted July 21, 2009 Super User Posted July 21, 2009 Don't be afraid to go to the ER. About 10 years ago I got a worm hook in me deep and debated about whether to remove it myself since it wasn't bleeding that bad. I ended up going to the ER and the Dr. said that they would have to be careful in taking it out because it was very close to the artery. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted July 21, 2009 Super User Posted July 21, 2009 A tetanus shot may be a good idea. Had to go ER myself about a year ago, hook buried in my thumb.......not fun. Quote
Elite Image Fishing Posted July 21, 2009 Posted July 21, 2009 I had a red eye shad stuck in both pinkies. Needless to say, not much could be done except a visit to ER. Quote
cato Posted July 21, 2009 Posted July 21, 2009 I've had one in the finger too. It wouldn't come back out so we had to turn it, popping it out another side of my finger and then cut off the end of the hook where the barb is and pull it back through the original side. Hurt like crazy too!!! Quote
Ellesar Posted July 23, 2009 Posted July 23, 2009 I got one stuck in my hand putting up halloween decorations! Quote

Koop Posted July 24, 2009 Posted July 24, 2009 I had a red eye shad stuck in both pinkies. Needless to say, not much could be done except a visit to ER. How the heck did you manage that? Quote
skeetermike Posted July 25, 2009 Author Posted July 25, 2009 Yeah, the same bait in each pinky finger... how the ****! All in all mine wasn't that bad I guess, it just looked bad and was sore for a couple days. Now u can't even tell where it went in. The ol I thought about going to church on Sunday morn. and the fish flopped story was exactly the way mine happened. We were camped on the lake and my buddy stayed the night in our camper wanting to go out fishing early so what could I say. We went out this morning and caught 7 all around 2lb range. I was really hook shy with each one!! Makes a guy think twice about grabbing a fish with a mouth fulla hooks now! Quote
