mrlitetackle Posted July 21, 2009 Posted July 21, 2009 First off i must say thank you to Fish Chris for inspiring this adventure with the new UL. I just bought a Sahara 500, paired with a 5'6" fish eagle II UL.......and lined it up with some suffix braid (2lb dia., 6lb test). Mainly i wanted to use this setup for panfish and smaller bass, but the recent posts by Fish Chris made me want to take the gear to Lunker Lake, as to put it to the test. So i prepared for some larger fish on the UL by picking up some jumbo shiners at the baitshop and headed out for the day. the day was good, i caught 6 bass on artificials, and 3 on the live bait. Thats when the 7.6 lb'er rocked the UL, and the battle was on!!!!!!! The drag was screaming, my heart was pounding...... and im fishing from shore....so i have no idea if i'll be able to land this fish!!! What a fight!!!!! It took a little while to get her in, but she swam away just fine after it was all done. the UL gear is completely awesome, and im now completely addicted to it :D .... the 1st pic is your classic dink on the UL the 2nd was a decent fish, but amazing on the UL the 3rd i can only describe as epic!!!! IdahoLunkerHunter Posted July 21, 2009 Posted July 21, 2009 WOLVERINE STRIKES AGAIN! Nice fish and grats on the catch! Quote
DINK WHISPERER Posted July 21, 2009 Posted July 21, 2009 Man i would be a nervous wreck if i hooked that hawg on UL, LOL!!!! CONGRATS Quote
bigtimfish Posted July 21, 2009 Posted July 21, 2009 Awesome. My best on a UL is a 6# on 4# line. Bank fishing. It was on a frog bodied beetle spin. What a rush yours must have been. I jumped in thigh deep water to get mine. Quote
Uncle Leo Posted July 21, 2009 Posted July 21, 2009 It's all about the drag when fighting a big one on light gear. Good use of drag, great job, I have seen some amazing catches on light tackle. If the fish is played right it can be landed. I seen my partner land a 28 lb Musky on a light action spinning rod with 8 lb line. Quote
Rand Posted July 21, 2009 Posted July 21, 2009 Nice fish dude! All my biggest fish (7-11,7-11,7-13) have come on Spinning gear. Not ultralight but still awesome. Rand Quote

lightsout Posted July 21, 2009 Posted July 21, 2009 thats awesome man! a fish that size on a 5 1/2' UL rod is something you will never forget! Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted July 21, 2009 Super User Posted July 21, 2009 Been there done that and the fish died from the effort. Many years ago there was a cicada hatch and the bass were keyed on them. The only way to catch a few was to "match the hatch" I started using a bass popping bug, usually fished with a flyrod, on UL with 4# line and hooked a 7# 5oz. largemouth. After the long struggle, I landed it, quickly weighed and released it. It just rolled over on its side and was dead. I had it for dinner the next day. While you are having fun, the effort of the fish to excape may very well cause its death. Other fish species are subject to the same fate, striped bass is one of them. Quote
LCpointerKILLA Posted July 21, 2009 Posted July 21, 2009 WOLVERINE! haha thats funny. pretty lame fish... Too bad you didn't go to winter park, then they would be legit. Just kidding though man nice work Quote
bassman31783 Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 Man your killing them out there. You need to set up your own guide service to Lunker Lake. $150 includes - One days trip to Lunker Lake - Possible fish of a life time - & your very own blind fold for the drive to Lunker Lake ;D Quote
Quitlimpin Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 So you've gotten so used to catching toads at this Honey Hole that you have to use UL gear to get a rush. Not cool, bro. I'm so jealous it hurts. Seriously though, another great report. Quote

BassinSoldier Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 Gotta love the UL dude! I'm from Jacksonville, FL originally and used to fish some golf course ponds up there with a UL. My best was a 5#er on 4# mono. Such a rush man! Great fish, and I know you had to have had a blast with that epic battle!!! Quote
