Took my friend's eight-year old son fishing this afternoon and we did great.

First stop was Burger King, for lunch and where I spooled some 6 pound Trileen XL onto his ultralight spinning reel.  He loved running the old line off the spool and having it go all over the table, bench and floor.

Rigged him with a small gold hook and a one-inch red/white bobber and off we went.

Stopped at Tackle Express and picked up 48 minnows. We usually throw Nightcrawlers, but I wanted him to learn how to fish minnows.

We first hit the pond at Southlake off Midlothian, but the sun was too high and we did not have any shade so we struck out.

We drove to my local pond and fished from the bank where there was shade.

We found them close to the bank in the shade.

He really has improved his casting.  He still leaves too much slack in the line and I keep reminding him to throw the bail with his hand and to pull on the line to get it tight before reeling in the slack, but otherwise he is doing great.

He out-fished me.  I caught 6 largemouth bass while he caught 6 largemouth bass and one crappie.

I had to help him unhook and release the fish as his hands are too small and he does not have the are strength to hold the bass by their lip.

All in all, he had a great time.

As for his eleven-year old brother who is in New Jersey visiting the grandparents, he went out saltwater fishing with his grandfather today and caught only a dogfish.

I know he is going to bonkers when he finds out what his little brother caught today.

Isn't it great to take a kid fishing!  :)   :)   :)

That's awesome. It would have been nice for someone to take me when I was younger. It will mean more to him then you will ever know, even if it hasn't hit him yet.

Sounds like a blast!  Wish I had someone to teach me when I was little.  His brother will be envious for sure!

Yes, Craig's Tackle Express.

He has some good prices on Shimano reels, too.

Pond is in my neighborhood.  :)
