paul. Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 i decided to try the big baits this year and glad i have. got got one of my new toys in the mail a few days ago and have been playing around with it at a few ponds. can't wait until i get to take a serious trip with it. if you haven't, you really ought to give the big trout baits a try. so far i'm real impressed. no, i haven't caught a real big one yet, but gimme time. in the mean time, the decent ones seem to have no problem eating an 8" trout swimbait. you don't have to have trout where you live for these to produce. you don't have to be fishing "big water". you don't have to have a boat. and no, they're not complicated to learn. in fact they seem to be rather intuitive once you start fooling around with them. worst thing you can do is overthink 'em and overwork 'em. at least that seems to be the case so far. yeah, they hit the water like somebody dropped a cow out of an airplane. yeah, they can be awkward to throw at first. yeah, they can cost a little more than your average bait. but yeah, they sure do produce and they sure are fun - big time. give 'em a try if you get a chance. hope y'all are catchin' some too. Super User fourbizz Posted July 13, 2009 Super User Posted July 13, 2009 Nice Paul. Id really like to hear your long term opinion of that baits durability and fishiness. Quote
bassman31783 Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 I'm with you. Just started to fish the big baits seriously this year. So much fun. I have yet to catch a really big bass on one yet. Biggest so far has been about 4lbs. It's amazing to me how many 2.5 / 3 pounders you will catch on an 8in bait. Is that the Catch-22 you were fishing with? Quote
BassmanDan Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 Great advice and a good looking fish ya got there. Good to know the bass east of the Mississippi like trout too. Quote
mrlitetackle Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 nice one!!! i wouldnt necessarily call that one small that took that bait though!! ive been giving my larger swimbaits some time on the water as well, and still nothing too substantial yet.....but ive only been tossing them for about a month or so. kingfisher85 Posted July 14, 2009 Posted July 14, 2009 thats a nice one! now i have to ask, what is the weight of that monster in your display pic??? Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted July 14, 2009 Super User Posted July 14, 2009 Come on Paul, let's get real. Did you actually think YOU wouldn't produce with that bait? I think the bigguns hit your lures out of fear. I can't wait to see what you do when pre-spawn gets here. Quote
paul. Posted July 14, 2009 Author Posted July 14, 2009 thats a nice one! now i have to ask, what is the weight of that monster in your display pic??? thanks. 13-8. and to tell ya the truth bb, honestly you may have seen me holding my last bass over 10 lbs. i had 2 lakes that produced most of the really nice fish i've been fortunate enough to catch. both of 'em have really fallen off this year and gone belly up. so y'all will probably be seeing me with bass the size of the one above or smaller from now on. either that, or i'll just show ya pics of my baby girl when she catches a nice one. i hate that this has happened, but sooner or later it was bound to. can't complain, it's been a good run. i have a couple of lakes i'm trying to learn now that i think will kick out some real nice ones in the future, but both of those are about 2 years away if everything goes right. never take good fishin' spots for granted. they can be gone in the blink of an eye. :'( Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted July 14, 2009 Posted July 14, 2009 Funny thing about these "BIG" baits is that they are only "BIG",.....to the angler!! Had a gentleman on my boat a few weeks back. When I broke out the rod w/ the Working Girl on it, he said,......You think they can really EAT that thing????? Later that night, 5 pounder in hand, I pointed out the shapes in her belly. One fish was obviously a b/g and the other was the shape of a Perch or something close. My comment after pointing out the last 2 meals this fish ate was "to answer your question,....well, not only will they eat this,....they will eat 2 of these AND STILL TRY TO FIT A 3RD!!!!!! UPSIZE, UPSIZE, UPSIZE if you want bigger fish. Who cares if other anglers think you're nuts,....as long as the fish don't!! Quote
