deermaster Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 found a new pond about 3 minutes (literally) from my house, somewhere in the 5 acre range, and went out tonight to try it. well, i caught the biggest bass of my life. i dont have a camera phone (how conveniant lol), but it measured 23", LMB. caught it on a bubblegum zoom trick worm, weightless/weedless, 3/0 gami, 30 lb power pro, shimano sedona, on a MH 6' rod. i was swimming it just below the surface, jerking it to the top every so often, and she SLAMMED it. ran straight into a bush, i am VERY glad i got a larger reel and was using braid. pulled it out no prob, was 23", and very very fat. im guessing 4 lbs...? possibly bigger, im not sure. i dont want to over estimate, but im pretty sure it was atleast 4 lbs. anyway, i think this pond is a keeper . thanks for listening! aarogb Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 I would say it would be a little bit over 4 pounds, but there is no way to know for sure because all bass are not created equal. Anyway, it's a GREAT fish and I hope you catch many more like it!!! Quote
Matt Jungblut Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 im going to say it was probally twice as big as u think i have caught tons of bass 18"-21" and they average from high 3lbs to 5 1\2 lbs to a fish 3 inches bigger should be atleast 2 pounds if not more Quote
Big-O Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 Yep, I agree with Matthew....a 23" fattie weighs more than 4 lbs but great job regardless Big O www.ragetail.com Quote
bassman31783 Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 Go ahead and push that weight on up too 5lbs at least Hey as long as you know it's your new PB that's all that matters. Congrats my man, that's a great feeling. Invest in a camera. At least a disposable one. It will be one of the best, fishing, decisions you'll ever make. Memory is good but it fades much quicker then the picture will. Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted June 25, 2009 Super User Posted June 25, 2009 Second the suggestion of buying a camera. Congrats on your new pb. Quote
deermaster Posted June 25, 2009 Author Posted June 25, 2009 thanks everybody. i had a camera i took hunting with me every trip, but last duck season i guess the salt air got to it or something, and it stopped working, but im definately getting one soon. i felt a little sick letting it go with nothing but a memory. i think i will push it up to 5 lbs or more....maybe bigger rotfl. thanks again. TommyBass Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 5lbs? Thats crazy. As long as you couldn't see its ribs and it was a genetic messup it weighs more than 5 lbs. Here in Indiana, a solid, averagely fat 20" fish is 5 lbs. I would guestimate the weight of your fish at or above 7 lbs. Quote
IdahoLunkerHunter Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 4lbs and 7lbs is a whole different ball game. Gratz on the catch! Quote
Uncle Leo Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 Great bass, at that length you may have more of a personal best then you think. Regardless of the weight you caught your PB thats's all that matters. Now go get a 25 " that could be a 7 lber! Quote
Super User Bassin_Fin@tic Posted June 25, 2009 Super User Posted June 25, 2009 Take the girth next time. Congrats man-feels good don't it? Quote
bass wrangler569 Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 Unless that bass was hyper-skinny, 23" should put it anywhere from 6-8lbs Congrats Quote
deermaster Posted June 26, 2009 Author Posted June 26, 2009 thanks again everybody. it was 23" and its girth looked very propotionate to its lenght, not skinny at all. next time a girth measurement and pic is definately going to be happening 8-) Quote
bhos Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 Congrats! That's the kind of fish that makes all the hours fishing without a catch worth the time and effort. I've caught a (small) number of 22" fish and I don't recall any (that I've weighed) being under 5 lbs., so I would concur with 6-8. Go check out cabela's, they have a rapalla kit that includes a mini 50 lb digital scale on sale for $15 (down from $50), the scale itself has decent reviews. I just snagged one since my only other scale is too bulky to carry around bank fishing at ponds all the time. Then go back and catch her again to weigh her, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. Super User .dsaavedra. Posted June 27, 2009 Super User Posted June 27, 2009 invest in a scale my man. you'll be glad. awesome fish btw! my PB was 23.5" and 7lbs. so your's is probably in the 6-7lb range if it was proportionately fat. Quote
Mottfia Posted June 27, 2009 Posted June 27, 2009 Congrats man. I think you should hit that pond up alittle more. Keep us up dated on that pond! Mottfia Quote
hookset on 3 Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 That 23# incher and her friends should only be seeing lures from you! sssshhhh. double secret that honey hole. Quote
DINK WHISPERER Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 Depending on its girth, it was ATLEAST 5 1/2-6lbs CONGRATS Quote
LCpointerKILLA Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 I cant believe she hit a bubblegum worm. and on topwater... thats a trip. Congrats. Quote
Big Mike in Fl Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 I had a FWC biologist tell me it took an 8 lb fish to make 23"...atleast florida strain. I cant believe she hit a bubblegum worm. and on topwater... thats a trip. Congrats. I've been slaying big bass on mertiolate (bright flouresant orange) trick worms fished top water, for the last few weeks. one day caught a 7, missed a 10+ and got a few 5's...all within about an hour of each other... don't doubt the floating worm technique, it gets the big girls out.
