Big-O Posted June 12, 2009 Posted June 12, 2009 That's a WIDE Body Paul, so I'm guessin' her at 9.00 to 9.25 if she has some thickness to go with it. Regardless of weight, she's a healthy gal with nice genectics to boot Big O www.ragetail.com Quote
avid Posted June 12, 2009 Posted June 12, 2009 There's no magic to circle hooks, I use them alot when fishing for bass with micro baits and very light equipment. A typical example of this would be using an ultra light power rod and a weightless zoom finesse worm. There's no way you can get a proper hook set with such a light rod so circle hooks are basically the only way to go. As you know you just start reeling and the fish will hook himself. When i get to the point where i really feel the urge to "cross er eyes" I just twist my body to the side. I have as good a hook up percentage with circle hooks as I do with regular worm hooks. It's fun and adds a layer of challenge. Not to mention that you'll rarely harm a bass with one. Have fun!!! Quote
LCpointerKILLA Posted June 12, 2009 Posted June 12, 2009 One more thing-I am assuming you are lip hooking the 'gills? nope. i used to lip hook 'em but i found they either got lazy or outright died too quickly that way. now i hook 'em through the meat just ahead of the tail. (a) they will not tire nearly as quickly. ( they will not usually go as deep or to the bottom where they can hide in something. © i can feel much better what the gill is doing down there because every beat of the tail is transmitted to me. (d) there is just something about this presentation that bass seem to like a little better. but definitely play around with it. you will find that baits will act differently when you hook them different ways. i think this has to do with where the weight of the hook is. for example, tail hooked gills seem to try to swim upward. lip hooked gills seem to try to swim downward. use this to your best advantage with the conditions you are facing. some people hook their baits in the back, or behind the bottom fin. i have found that with these 2 ways, the hook will occasionally rotate and hook back into the the bait instead of hooking the bass. so i don't use these methods very often. hope this helps and good luck with it. yeah and the hook is less likely swallowed, and a nicer set when hooked through the meat. skeetermike Posted June 13, 2009 Posted June 13, 2009 Good one Paul. I bet he put up a fight on that small equipment! I've got a 6-6" spinning rod with 6-20 braid that I use to catfish with sometimes. With the right hook u can really bow up on em. I'm going to say that fish is a good 7lber easily. I haven't seen too many big ones lately since the pressure is so bad here in AR. It deff. has the length but could be fatter and the eyes are not just overly large. I'm curious though about that wt? mrlitetackle Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 surprised to hear the weight.... from the pic i would guestimate around 9 myself, and as we all know ..... pics are mighty deceiving at times either way, great fish..... and the circle hooks take some time to get used to..... i made the switch about 6 months ago myself, and the "need" to set the hook still lingers!!!
