booneangler Posted November 22, 2008 Posted November 22, 2008 Just wondering if anyone has tried these and if so how did you like them and what size did you like the most? Quote
skillet Posted November 22, 2008 Posted November 22, 2008 Have never used the SpeedTrap, can't really help you there. Just wanted to say that those folks put out some great wooden lures in there day. I have one of their Dalton Specials that I had basically quit using for fear of losing it . Found a "Mom and Pop" type of baitshop while in FL that was selling wooden baits supposedly made by the fellow that sold out to Luhr Jensen. Can't verify it, this would make him older than dirt (my age )... skillet Quote
21farms Posted November 22, 2008 Posted November 22, 2008 it must be a regional-thing but i never heard of speed traps until i moved to california and started fishing the delta. out here, speed traps are very popular. they're my favorite crankbaits and i have one tied on all the time. the 1/4 oz size in "crystal crawdad" and "sexy shad" (new) are my top producers. Super User Muddy Posted November 22, 2008 Super User Posted November 22, 2008 Great bait, I just started using them at the end of this past season. I will be adding a few more to the arsenal. Quote
Super User Marty Posted November 23, 2008 Super User Posted November 23, 2008 I have both the 1/8 and 1/4 oz, but rarely use the smaller one. I don't use the larger one all that often, but it's a good lure. Last time I used it I caught a couple of smallies. Quote
booneangler Posted November 23, 2008 Author Posted November 23, 2008 well how deep does the 1/4 go? Quote
zbass Posted November 23, 2008 Posted November 23, 2008 The 1/4 goes about 2.5-3.5 feet. They are great baits around the rocks and rip rap. Deflect very well. Have a loud rattle. They have fairly thin sides so don't smack the water to get weeds off. Learned the hard way :'( Quote
Stringjam Posted November 23, 2008 Posted November 23, 2008 Great, tight wigglers! I use both the 1/8th and 1/4......they get bit. Quote
Super User Marty Posted November 24, 2008 Super User Posted November 24, 2008 The 1/4 goes about 2.5-3.5 feet. It's rated for up to 8' and I know from my fishing that I get reasonably close to that depth, at least 6'. Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted November 24, 2008 Super User Posted November 24, 2008 The 1/4 goes about 2.5-3.5 feet. It's rated for up to 8' and I know from my fishing that I get reasonably close to that depth, at least 6'. X2 Quote
booneangler Posted November 24, 2008 Author Posted November 24, 2008 ok good i may pick up a few at Bass Pro. Quote
Super User Munkin Posted November 24, 2008 Super User Posted November 24, 2008 They are very fragile > I have shattered 3 when they hit rocks. Allen Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted November 24, 2008 Super User Posted November 24, 2008 They are very fragile > I have shattered 3 when they hit rocks.Allen Th speed trap was designed to be burned through the water at mid depths through bait fish , not to be bounced off the bottom. Quote
Willzx225 Posted November 24, 2008 Posted November 24, 2008 Awesome bait. The only problem I have with it is that I don't throw it enough. Great in the prespawn. Quote
Stringjam Posted November 24, 2008 Posted November 24, 2008 Luhr-Jensen cranks are typically thin because the designer (Tom Seward) really trips on wall-thickness on plastic baits. The point is to give plastic baits more of the lively attributes of lightweight balsa construction. Tom knows his stuff. Check out the Poe's Comp Cedars for more of his handiwork. Quote
booneangler Posted November 25, 2008 Author Posted November 25, 2008 are you saying luhr jensen and poe's have the same designer? Quote
Stringjam Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 are you saying luhr jensen and poe's have the same designer? Tom designed the Hot Lips and Speed Trap for LJ, and was also hired by Wordens (owners of the Poes line) to tweak the 300 and 400 into a another small line of baits called the Poe's Competition Cedars. These were supposed to be a more "premium" Poes aimed at tournament fishermen and deep crank experts. Doesn't seem like they really marketed the line much. They've been out for years now but have pretty much sat in obscurity most of that time - - I noticed Tackle Warehouse JUST started stocking them. He also designed another bait for the Comp Cedars lineup, the 4500 LR, that busts 20' quite easily. Really good crank! Quote
booneangler Posted November 26, 2008 Author Posted November 26, 2008 do you know if those competition poes are any good? Quote
21farms Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 tom also designed worden's timber tiger which supposedly carried his design ideas further than the speed trap. Quote
TournyFish001 Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 the speed trap is a great bait I have had some of the most vicious hits on it- if they want it you will be very busy all day long Quote
Stringjam Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 do you know if those competition poes are any good? Yes I do know......they indeed are. Quote
