one of the great things about the sport we love is its variety. different folks with different goals fish in different water with different methods. while i try to be at least somewhat well-rounded in my approach, i've made it no secret that i'm quite fond of live bait bassin'. one reason is that it hearkens back to a simpler time and brings back a lot of fond childhood memories. but i ain't gonna lie, the main reason is that it flat out catches bass, good ones too. :) i realize that some folks just don't like it or use it for one reason or another. that's fine. i ain't trying to start a fight or or change anybody's mind here.

but maybe there's somebody out there who's wondering what the live bait gig is all about. maybe you've decided that want to try something different this year. maybe you've decided to step out of the box a little bit. maybe you're not happy with your results using artificials. maybe you've decided that you want to try to catch your biggest bass ever this year. whatever the reason, live bait might be worth a shot. while it's no silver bullet, it's definitely a viable option for producing quality fish. and in some cases, i'm convinced it's the best option. ;)

i was sure happy to meet up with this long, lean 8-5 today.   and what a rush on spinning tackle! i wondered if i'd ever get this one turned around as she stripped drag heading for the county line. like so many other big fish of all species across the world, she just couldn't resist the real thing.

hope y'all are catchin' some too. :)

That is a beautiful fish, not only is she big, but her colors are awesome!!!

On the live bait issue...I have no problem with people using live bait. For me, I don't use it because I'm tournament focused, so I'm always out there trying to improve my artificial bait techniques to get better at that game. Around here, getting minnows has become quite a chore with the new laws too. So it's just easier to get a bag of plastics or buy a crankbait!

I never think any less of a fisherman for using live bait. The hard part in fishing is finding them, and this aspect is not lost because you're using bait.

Beautiful fish! Great job. Tell us about the fish in your avatar.

thanks man. :)  avatar fish went 13 lbs. 8 oz.  caught feb. '06 on a jig and brush hog here in the great state of tennessee out of a sunken treetop in about 12 feet of water.  second biggest bass i ever caught.  quickly released after the picture.  if this fish is still alive today, she could easily be a swimming state record. :)

My biggest from my farm pond on artificials is 4-9.  I'll be using live gills this year to try and top that.  Good on ya man!

Do all of those pigs come out of the same body of water or are you fishing different locations?  That's truly amazing.  Great job man.

Who's anti live-bait?

Guns, subsistence farming, live-bait rigging - all things that make America my kind of place...What a beautiful late winter largemouth...Congratulations to ya!

For me, nothing is as sweet as that small early-summer window when I hit the big water with nothing less than 5 dozen soft craws...
