Well I fianlly managed to get my new combos and do a little yard casting. The new Chronarch MG 50's cast like a dream and paired with the Kistler Magnesium TS rods they are the perfect setup for me! Light and smooth and these rods fit in my hands perfectly. I managed to stand the chilly 30 degree temps for about an hour before my entire body was numb. My wife just kept looking out the back door and laughing, but hey cabin fever is awful and I have new toys! So I guess you could say that's just how I roll. Maybe I am crazy but I know most of us are guilty of yard fishin! Had a great day can't wait for the water to unthaw so I can really put them to the test!

I throw in the yard every year. Gets the arm back in shape. Winter has a way of letting you get soft on the casting and reeling muscles. The southern brothern don't have that problem. I will even throw the night before a tourny after I get my rods rigged. Just to make sure everything is adjusted properly.

I'm waiting for the ice to be gone also.

i do a lot of yard casting, i put a hard rubber weight on my line when i cast it my dogs chase it and i get a fight out of the dogs, good for checking my drag. they even shake they're heads when i reel them in.

Well, I fish a concrete pond in my backyard. Although I have never

caught a fish, after a few beers and at night, I sometimes get a few

bites!

I also have done this, although  the lab may weigh too much the boston terriers (Bonnie & Clyde) are quite easy to lip ( keeps the fore arm in shape too).

The water is allready UNTHAWED!!

For those that don't get it unthawed is frozen, thawed is unfrozen.  I don't know why but it irks me hearing people say unthawed when talking about something being unfrozen.

Love backyard fishing. Do it all the time when the water's hard. I also do it every time a service a reel, just to make sure everything is copacetic.

I did have to modify my choice of baits after catching a cat.

A few years ago the stray cat population exploded. Turned out to OK for me. No more mice in the house. But.

I had always used a 5" Senko, and 5/0 ewg hook with the point buried in the middle of the bait instead of skin hooked. Also I would give it a shot a Pam, to make it slide through the grass easily.

Test casting one day, a cat came out of nowhere, and chomped down on my bait. I tried to get it away from the little beast, but succeeded only in setting the hook. And the fight was on. Puts a new face on term cat-fishing.

Did you know a little two pound cat puts up a lot better fight than a two pound bass? It's true, though I'm not particularly proud to admit it.

I finally got it cranked in to within about 8 feet of me when he jumped straight at me. I quickly reeled up the slack and hoisted him up in the air. Now I have a completely berserk cat hanging on the end of my line, and I'm thinking; What the whoop am I going to do with this thing?

Just then I hear my next door neighbor say something. What did he say you ask? He said; What the whoop are you going to do with that? And he has a big snot-eating grin on his face, clearly enjoying the situation.

I tried setting him down, to see if he'd run away and stop, and maybe I could shake him off. Instead, he comes at me again, and I hoist him up in the air again. I try this a few more times with no success. He keeps coming at me.

Is it possible that a big 260 pound man is afraid of a little two pound cat? You bet yer rectum, amigos. The only thing going through my mind besides what the whoop, is rabies shots.

Well, he finally spits the bait and hightails it out of Dodge.

I found the hook point still embedded in the Senko, and a cat tooth stuck in the plastic right next to the hook bend. It would appear the hook bend was jammed between a couple of teeth.

Lesson learned.

My new favorite backyard baits are a super spook, with all the hardware removed, and a pop-r, tied on backwards, again with all the hardware removed. The occasional cat will still jump on these baits, but they get off a lot easier.

Final bag: one cat caught and released on a Senko, one cat caught but not landed on the spook, and five cats caught but not landed on the pop-r. 15 pounds guesstimated weight.

I do alot of yard casting when the ice is still there. Hoping to get out there soon when there isn't snow on the lawn. I like to throw a little cylinder shaped piece of wood with a metal eyelet through it. Sometimes it gets stuck on something and I pretend to be hooking the big one.  :D

Them ain't cats they kittens.  I got 3 cats here at the store and the smallest would go 15 pounds, the other 2 are 20.

I swear I just got choked on a snickers bar when I read this!  The whole thing was funny but this line did it for me.

"Cat" fishing is great amusement. Paint a practice weight grey and tie a feather on the end. Game on! I had a red tail hawk go after it once until he saw me. That would have been a fight!

Great post .ghoti

Heck, every time it rains heavy I get a small pond in my back yard. If I could stock it I'd be in heaven.

Forgot to mention I got 2 cats at the house as well and I do quite a bit of "cat"fishin, I can't go near my rod rack for any reason without them perking up and come running expecting to play.
