After a twelve hour drive I made it home about nine last night.  It was great to meet and fish with both old friends and new ones.

Ronnie (with Muddy's meatballs) and Ghoti cooked up a great batch of groceries that satisfied even the most ravenous of us, including Speedbead.  Unfortunately, the food served up by the Lodge left a lot to be desired.

Despite the fact that the bass had lock-jaw, it was a great trip.  I was able to fish with Glenn (Glenn), Roadwarrior (Kent) and RiskKid (Carl.)  All have a great sense of humor and are truly enjoyable and knowledgeable fishing partners.

In addition,  I had the great good fortune of rooming with Kent, CJ and MassholeMike.  Very few know that Kent  gave up his own bed and slept on the couch in order to accommodate me when I was forced to cancel the cabin I had reserved when my room-mates dropped out at the last minute.  His selflessness is amazing, and I will be forever grateful.  I could go on and on about my room-mates.  CJ could be the next KVD.  Lots of knowledge and skill.  MassholeMike has the enthusiasm of youth and the drive to be a VERY good fisherman.  Everyone knows that he caught a lunker that most men only dream of.

When I add it all up, the camaraderie with old and new friends, and the opportunity to fish one of the most beautiful lakes I have ever seen have made my trip one of the best Ive ever had.  I'm very much looking forward to next year.

Man I don't even know where to start! G-Ville was a great time! The only problem was it didn't last long enough. I was like a kid in a candy store down there. All the great, kind hearted members and just not enough time to get to know them all well enough.

Road Warrior, thank you for everything. You have become a true friend. Can't wait till the next time we fish togather.

Long Mike, I enjoyed the conversation out on the back deck. You're top shelf man!

Mass Hole Mike, looks like you didn't need any coot poop! LOL Your well on your way! In my book your already there!

Alpster, I can't say enough about this guy. I'm gonna stick a pig with your gift. I'm so proud of it. Thank You!

Ryan, one of the nicest young men I've ever got to fish with. You've got it togather man.

Speedbead, Jimzee, and AJ, I felt like we'd been friends awhile. These guys are good ole boys! Dang good sticks too!

Riskkid and Shadcranker, you guys are cool...too cool! Hope we're gonna hit Ky./Barkley before long.

Glenn, Kerry, Gene, Ghoti, and Electrical, I felt like I didn't get to spend enough time with ya'll. Though the time and conversation we had was priceless, guess we'll make up for it next year. Hope I didn't leave anybody out.

I know, it sounds like I'm excepting a grammy but I am still blown away from how great our family here truely is.

Man, I sure am tormented that I wasn't there but I'm VERY happy to see all went off without a hitch and all had a good time.

It's an odd thing, these BR roadtrips,...you find yourself spending time with folks you probably would have never met in any other circumstance.  A plethora of personalities.  What comes from this is some amazing camaraderie and the excitement of looking forward to the next one.  They really are something special and it has torn at my heart to not have been able to be there this yr.

Ugh,...I wanna puke.

But I'm glad you all had a great time and I'm glad more members got to meet the ones I met last yr at Fork.  It really was a treat to meet the folks in person, especially when you feel you know them so well already.

Glenn and Keri are a class act, that's a given.  Great job by all and a special thank you needs to go to Alpster for all the legwork he did to make this happen for you guys.

I'm so glad we made him the first ELITE member.  He fills the shoes better than anyone could have hoped.  Excellent Job Ronnie and THANK YOU.

All the folks who cooked,...I know,...I missed out here too.  Shoot, just missing Muddy's meatballs almost made me cry mid week, lol.  But a thank you to the cooks as well and Brent,...a very nice gesture, and you weren't even there.  You're support of the board is noted and appreciated as always.

To Friends and Family,

Guys and gals, THANK YOU! for making our trip so successful

and fun. This group could only be improved upon by making it bigger!

I really encourage everyone to start planning to attend the 4th Annual

BassResource.com Roadtrip, you will not be disappointed, promise!

Special thanks to Glenn & Keri for turning a dream into a reality.

Kudos to Ronnie for really putting this year's event together. Muddy

for contributing and being a part of an adventure he could not attend.

Gary & Mary for a fabulous dinner and what I consider a new

friendship.

To everyone else, HOORAH! I hope to see you all next year.

What can I say that has not been said? Everyone caught fish, some caught a lot and some caught big ones (2- new PBs) that I know of. A great time was certainly had by all. There were a lot of reasons why the trip was special for me. Here's the quick list......

Working with Glen & Keri on the trip details was more a joy than a job. Glenn taught me a lot about polishing up the website and organizing the info. and getting to talk with them on the phone (mostly Keri) about details was fun and very helpful. I won't say anything about who I think is the brains of this organization.  ;)

Risk kid put Wayne & I up for the night going and coming. Fed us an amazing steak dinner, loaned me & Wayne his 19' Skeeter to fish with all week long. This is one of the most generous acts of kindness I have ever experienced. I met Carl last year on the Fork trip and he's just one of those guys you become instant friends with. It was a dream come true to fish Guntersville in that fancy boat. THANK YOU CARL!!!!!!!!! As an added treat, Shadcranker and his buddy Ron were there for dinner and Rob made it to Guntersville for the Wednesday night dinner.

Speadbead was an excellent roommate in the bassbus and a first class fishing partner for the week. He outfished me by a couple, but we both had a blast. We had a magic time on the lake. He is a pleasure to fish with. Everyone thought he was my personal servant because he kept running up and down the stairs to get stuff for me when my arthritic knees were hurting, and drove the buss half way home as I was feeling poorly on the way home. Thanks Wayne, you are the best!

MassHoleMike caught his PB at 6lbs 12oz while we were fishing together. I got to reach down and grab her for him. I will never forget the look on his face when that big girl came out of the water. He was only a little more excited than I was. Congratulations Mike!!!

I got to fish this week with jeff and roadwarrior. Jeff put us onto his spotted bass honey hole on Wednesday and Wayne and I caught a dozen fish there in the afternoon. We squeezed in a few hours of cold, windy fishing with Kent on Friday and had to cut it short to get on the road home. Let me tell you, our mods are great fishermen and very classy people.

We arrived Sunday afternoon and put the boat in the water for the maiden voyage. I even caught a little LM on the rocks where Mike got his PB. When we got back to the ramp and loaded the boat, Jimzee and A.J. came in right behind us. Jimzee was shaking like a dog passing a peach pit. He could barely push the buttons on his camera to show us the pictures of his new PB 7+ lbs. Jimzee and A.J. had this lake lake figured out. Later in his room, Jimzee was telling us exactly where and how they were catching fish and if that's not enough, he was giving everyone around the table his jigs. Jimzee is a true 'Southern Gentleman'. Meeting and getting to know him was one of the highlights of my trip. Send me those rod specs Blaine.

Muddy's meatballs were awesome as expected. I can go on and on about Dominick, because there aren't very many out there like him. Proud to call him my friend.

Ghotti (Gary) and his wife Mary did a pile of research for information on the website. THANK YOU! They also fed us like kings on Tuesday! Awesome food and desert. You guys are top notch!

CJ & Ryan fished together part of the week and tore em up, but let me tell you, these guys are the real deal. CJ has forgotten more about fishing than I know and is one of the most humble, likable and friendly guys you will ever meet. Wayne got to fish with him on Thursday, But if CJ hadn't promised me a spot on his boat at Kentucky Lake next year me & Wayne would have had a fight.  Ryan (Senko77) caught a bunch of fish on Guntersville then ran down to his next tournament and won it handily! He is an amazing young man with a lot of skill and humility. I sat next to him at Ghotti's dinner and we got to hang out with some other guys after ward. If he is the future of tournament fishermen, we are in good shape. Hey,  I can say I knew him when he was just a BR member. LOL

Great to see Long Mike again. I got to have dinner with him on Wednesday and hang out later in the evening telling fish stories. Long Mike is as sure as the sunrise, whatever he tells you, you can count on it.

I wish I could have had more time to spend with Dan & Gary, those Georgia boys were a pleasure to meet. There is simply not enough time to do all you want to do. Glad you guys were there.

Electrikal was also on board for some fishing and fellowship. I know he took some of our members out on his boat. He's another one I wish I had more time to spend with with. Great to meet him.

Last but not least, the board sponsors who gave away $$$$ worth of stuff. On Monday Night, at dinner we all received a complete free kit from J.J.s Magic and instructions on how to use it. This is an amazing product that will change the way you fish. On Tuesday, glenn shared about "Surelife" products "Please Release Me" and "Catch and Release" and we each were given generous supplies to try for ourselves. We showed up for dinner on Wednesday night and each of our tables were covered with "Evolution Jigs", "Cavitron Buzzbaits, Megastrike", KVD Line & Lure Spray", "Shakey Jigs", "GYCB Swimsenkos", Triangle also provided "Cyclone" visors and a $300 "Cyclone Line Winder"  and lots more stuff. I was blown away by the amount of free gear that we received, just for showing up. THANK YOU TO ALL WHO CONTRIBUTED!!!!

Bob Lusk spoke to our group about the biology and habitat for bass. His knowledge of the species is unbelievable. I had the unique experience of watching him fish with Glenn and Keri. He actually made this spotted bass that Keri caught, cough up a finesse worm Glenn had lost earlier. We know that for sure, because it's tail was dyed with J.J.'s Magic. Wayne & I also overheard (we were fishing about 100 feet away) a phone call from Mr. Lusk to Bill Dance about next year's trip. Don't tell anyone. ;)

Finally, (this is my longest post ever) I know the economy sucks. As a Land Surveyor, I am in the housing industry.  :(  I am also blessed to have the bassbus, but I made this trip (Wayne paid more than his share of the expenses) for a very few dollars. Be creative, ask for help, but don't miss next year's trip to Kentucky Lake. If you love to bass fish, there will never be a better opportunity to have the fishing experience of your life. Ask MassHoleMike if you think I am exaggerating.

I am very proud to have shared this experience!

God Bless you all,

2009 NO EXCUSES!

Wow! I really can't add much to what's already been said. But here goes.

Some random thoughts in addition to what's already been said:

  • Hearing about new PB's makes be a proud papa. It's awesome we could have a small part in it, and experience it with you.
  • The lodge, cabins, boat ramps, and facilities were world class! Absolutely fantastic. Beautiful lodge and outstanding service. When the temps dropped, they quickly scrambled and gave us a room to use for the potlucks - for FREE! Also, you guys didn't see the wait staff helping us lay out all the goodies prior to the dinner - even supplying the bags y'all used to carry your stuff back to your rooms. And they even stayed during the presentations, listening intently.
  • My biggest complaint: This was WAY TOO SHORT!! I didn't have nearly enough time to chat with each and every one of you as much as I wanted to. I feel I really missed out.
  • Cool moment: Bob Lusk fishing w/Gene & Keri, chatting on the phone with Ray Scott and Bill Dance. He even MADE Mr. Bass get on the computer while talking to him and got him to log on to BassResource.com so he could explain to him what we were about and what we were doing there!
  • Biggest relief: nothing went wrong. There were no "bad" guides; no rude locals; no breakdowns, mishaps, or injuries; in short, there were no bad experiences.
  • Best wildlife scenery: all the deer at the park! I think they outnumbered the squirrels!
  • Funniest phrases: "Really? I just thought he was some homeless guy!" and "From a human perspective, they're just like twinkies."
  • Thanks to: Alpster, Muddy, Ghoti & Mary, Bob Lusk, and my wife for making this event happen! There's no way it would've been nearly as good without all your help!
  • And a PROFOUND thanks to our sponsors! They brought tons of giveaways and items for the raffle. Our small group of less than 30 people made over $400 for Cast For Kids as a result! Please give a shout out to all who donated:

    • JJ's Magic (and Ol' Nelly spinnerbaits and jigs )
    • SureLife Laboratories
    • Delos Tackle
    • ExtremeLures.com
    • Triangle Sports
    • KVD Line & Lure conditioner and BTS Protectant
    • Megastrike, Cavitron, and Evolution jigs and shakee heads

Please show them your gratitude by doing business with these outstanding companies!

And finally, a HUGE thank you to everyone who made it! Keri and I thoroughly enjoyed meeting you all and getting the opportunity to talk with each of you.

Here's to '09!

What a trip!!! I won't say it as well as some of the others, but here's my fifth of a dimes worth.

Thanks to Glenn and Keri for everything you two did to make this such a success. You did your selves proud. Guntersville State Park was an excellent choice.

Thanks to all the sponsors who really stepped up to the plate.

Thanks to Alpster for everything he did to make this happen. Ronnie is truly one of those special human beings. I'm glad to have finally met you.

To electrikal; thanks Rick, it was a pleasure. I'd fish with you again, anytime. You need something, let me know. If I can do it, I will.

To Senko77; Ryan, it was a treat to meet you. Folks, this is an excellent young man.

To RW; Kent, it was a tough day we had on the water, not many fish, two frozen *****, and a new friend. I'm calling it a success.

There were a lot of people I didn't get to spend as much time with as I wanted. We got in late on Sunday, and left first thing Thursday morning. We just ran out of week. To Blaine and wife, AJ, CJ, Carl, Wayne, MHMike, and Gene, I'll do better next time, I promise. I really wanted to sit down with all you guys, and just didn't get the chance.

Long Mike and I planned to fish together one day, and it didn't happen. It will next time.

Thanks to everybody for making me, and Mary, feel like part of the family. It was awesome.

Se you all next year.

VIVA, Kentucky

Cheers,

GK

Well I guess I better tell a little bit about the trip. I will try to keep it short but there is a lot to tell.

Saturday, we left WV about 6 am Saturday and headed south. I stopped along the way to pick up AJ Fernatt and then we were off.

I got to meet a forum legend along the ride down. Yep, that's right, Burley in the flesh. We stopped and had lunch with Burley at Cracker Barrel in Abingdon, Va. He came all the way down (50 minute drive) to meet us for lunch. After lunch, Burley gave me a pack of Lake Fork 7/0 weighted hooks to use with my swimbaits. Guys, Burley is the real deal. He also tried to get me to take one of his setups and numerous other lures. I can't wait to fish with him this summer when he comes up my way.

We finally arrived in Guntersville at 7 pm after a short BPS detour along the way. I was beat from the ride down and turned in about 10:30 pm.

Sunday morning we hit the lake early. Words cannot describe just how big this lake was. Keep in mind I am just a country boy from WV and the biggest lake I fish is 2,650 acres. (Stonewall Jackson) You really had to watch for the depth changes in the lake. One minute you were in 35 feet of water and the next minute it was 2.5 feet of water. CRAZY!! We fished all day getting used to this monstrous sized lake. I started throwing a spinnerbait at around 5 pm that evening in about 5 foot of water. The next thing I know I was hooked to a freight train. After about a two minute struggle, AJ finally lipped her for me. I was shaking so hard I could barely stand up. My first fish at Guntersville ended up being my new PB. She was 7.5 pounds, shaped like a football, and beat my old PB by three ounces. A few minutes later I hooked a dink on the spinnerbait and that was it for the day.

We got back to the dock and I was still shaking from the fish. We meet up with Jeff, Alpster, MassholeMike, and Speedbead. These guys were high-fiving me as I could still barely stand up. Man, what a rush! :o

Monday morning we headed out and went 17 miles north of the lodge. It was 38 degrees and it ended up being a tough bite. We finally figured out that the fish were holding in about 12-15 foot of water. AJ put a few smaller bass in the boat toward evening on a trap along some riprap. I got a big goose egg for the day but did manage to hook the biggest crappie I have ever seen. That thing was 17-18 inches long! We got back just in time for the evening dinner and meet everyone. Special thanks to Muddy for the awesome meatballs. They were fantastic!! Also thanks to JJ's Magic for the awesome products. This stuff works people!!

Tuesday morning came with 32 degree temps along with it. :o AJ and I started looking for places that looked like back home. We had a miserable boat ride that morning for 2.5 miles until we found "the spot." It had everything we were used to fishing back home, flooded brush in deeper water. We went to work with the jigs. In a half hour we boated 12 fish, the smallest was 2.8 pounds. I ended up getting broke off in one brush pile. I set the hook and had her on for about ten seconds and then the line went limp. It was a big fish but I'll never know how big. We were loving life. We finally found a pattern that worked - look for places that looked like back home and fish them. ;D

We picked my wife Dawn up around noon after it had warmed up to about 53 degrees. We went back to same cove and caught a few more fish on cranks along the riprap including a white bass that Dawn caught. That evening we fished closer to the park and campground. I was slow-rolling a spinnerbait along a cliff in about 20 feet of water and hooked up with my second biggest fish of the trip. AJ lipped her (thanks again man) and she ended up going 6 lbs. 4 oz. These fish look just like footballs and have huge guts on them. To give you an idea, earlier in the day I caught a spot on a jig that might have been 15 inches long, but it weighed 3.25 lbs. :o CRAZY!!! We retired that evening for some great camp pasta prepared by Ghoti and his wonderful wife Mary. This stuff was so good, and they fixed enough to feed an army. We took some back to the cabin with us for later. ;)

Special thanks for Ghoti and Mary for the great food and Please Release Me for the generous samples you provided.

Wenesday morning, AJ and I headed out down the lake in search of some more places that looked like back home. We had studied the lake map the night before and found another cove that resembled the one we fished Tuesday and we were right. laydowns with deep water nearby. This cove was shaped just like the lower section of Italy, so from there on out it became "Little Italy." ;D We got the jigs out and went to work again. We ended up losing four fish in that cove that were brutes, but caught several nice ones too. The other side of the cove had boat houses and docks and we caught a few more on cranks around the docks. They were all dinks. We headed back up the lake around evening time to be close enough to the ramp so we could fish until it was time for dinner. We settled on fishing deeper water with laydowns on the main lake close to the park. AJ was throwing a jig and I was throwing a crank. We caught several more fat spots along the cliff wall. Those spots fought so hard compared to their size. They were all three pounds or better.

That evening we were treated to a awesome dinner with loads of stuff to be given away from the BR sponsors. I learned a ton from the speakers and you guys should have seen all the stuff they were giving away. I was like a kid in a candy store. ;D

Special thanks for Glenn for having the dinner in such a fine place, the guys at KVD line conditioner, Bob "Pond Boss" Lusk for a great speech, and all others who donated for this dinner. It was awesome, THANKS!! ;)

Thursday came, knowing this was our last day on the water we were on a mission. Dawn, AJ, and I headed out down the lake early back to "Little Italy" to see if we could convince those bruisers to bite again on a jig we lost the previous day. We tried a cove first across from Lil' Italy because the wind was blowing in excess of 30 mph. AJ hooked up with a nice fat four pounder in four foot of water and that got us to thinking. Are these fish finally moving up shallow the day before we leave? :( We tried for the rest of the day to stir up something. We even resulted to drop shotting in 50 foot of water for suspended fish but could not hold the boat over the fish long enough due to the wind. We ended up running a brand new trolling motor battery down. It was crazy out there that day. Four foot waves and we nearly lost AJ out of the boat on the ride back to the dock. Never-the-less, we went back smiling and laughing from all the fun we had.

That night, AJ and I spent time with all the guys and had one heck of a BS session. Best part of the trip right there IMHO. Thanks fellas!!

Friday morning, it was now time to leave. We left a sunny 72 and came home to a miserable 39 with rain. On a side note, we stopped back by BPS again to ease the pain of not getting to fish the Big "G" one more day. This was an awesome trip and I can't wait until the next one. "09" NO EXCUSES!! 8-)

I also want to give some thanks to every one I got to meet on this trip, without them it would have been just another fishing trip.

Glenn and Keri, thanks for all the trouble you went through in setting this trip up and the great site you provide us. I'm glad I got to meet you both.

Alpster, this guy is the real deal. Always positive and a joy to be around. He is just one of those guys that draws you to him. Ronnie, thanks for all the hard work you put into this trip to make it happen. I feel like I found a true friend for life after I met you. Thanks a bunch for all those crank boxes. Keep on keeping on. ;)

Speedbead, thanks for the brews man and for all the daily reports on the cell phone. We will get together this summer and fish a few days whether it be down my way or up your way.

Glenn, thanks for the class on the mojo-rig and all the advice on the lake. Glenn is a stand-up guy with lots of knowledge.

Risk Kid, one of the first BR guys I got to meet. Let me tell you, he is the real deal. What he done for Ronnie and Wayne was awesome and he has a place to stay at my house anytime he wants it.

Roadwarrior, thanks for the jigs man. I still didn't get to put that Kistler rod and Daiwa reel in your hand. Maybe one step at a time, enjoy the Revo man.

Long Mike, probably one of the biggest surprises on the trip. Not at all what I was expecting. A great guy, very soft spoken, and a hoot to talk to. Look forward to more BS'ing on the next trip.

Ghoti and Mary, a great cook and even better friend. Thanks for the brews and look forward to more info on that trip. ;)

MassholeMike, dude what can I say. I felt almost as good as you did when you caught that hawg. Let it be known from this day forward that a Yankee fan can get along with a Redsox fan when it comes to fishing. Hope to see you on the next one.

C.J., it was great getting to meet you and listen to all the knowledge you shared so freely to the group. Looking forward to Kentucky.

Senko77, this guy has it going on. I wish you the best this year Ryan in your tournaments. You deserve it all dude!

Electrikal, it was good to meet you and finally put a face behind the name. Enjoy those new Dobyn's rods man.

Shadcranker, glad we got to meet even though it was very brief.

And last but certainly not least, AJ and Dawn, you guys are great fishing buddies and I can't wait until we do it again.

I apologize if I forgot anybody.

I will post pics of the trip after Glenn releases the video.

Just a note about the status of the video...

I JUST got the last pictures and videos from a few members two days ago, so now I can finally begin working on it.

However, I'm now dealing with a firedrill this week regarding rumors and misconceptions with forum members regarding forum policies, so production has been postponed until things are taken care of.  Apologies for the delay, but the membership here is my #1 priority.  Nothing else comes first (including advertisers!).

While I know I've been posting interviews with the pros lately, please understand these were shot a month before the roadtrip and I was able to create them all at one time BEFORE the roadtrip.  They're all done, I'm just posting them one at at time now.  So I am not prioritizing them over the roadtrip video.

I had really hoped to have it done by now, but again, the membership takes priority over everything else.  It's much more important to me to address the concerns of the membership than edit videos right now.

Thanks for your understanding.

OK, it's been three weeks, and every board member with the exception of the attendees has pretty much forgotten about the trip.  Glenn, when are you going to FINALLY get around to posting images of the trip?  Inquiring minds want to know.

Almost done with the video Mike.  Hope to have it done by next week.

Next time, YOU get to edit it. ;D

Glenn, I just watched the video. Don't know if I'm in *** of you guys being more able to get together because of the geographics , or because of the loads of fun you all looked like you were having. Either way, great vid. Brian

Man, looks like my quotes were picked apart, making it seem as though Kentucky Lake wouldn't be my first choice......... ;D

I know we're spoiled in TX, but the lake record at Kentucky Lake was 13lbs over 23 years ago. We catch 13 lb'ers in TX every year. (i use 'we' very loosely there) ;D

...... (c.j. 'my bass' like "hardwood" the best, they (the bass) tell me that grass is for sissy bass! LOL )

(just kidding...... i've been bagging worms non - stop for the last 3 days, so i need some comic relief.......44,000 worms and counting..... :'( I'll do 60k before the day is up.

Ship mine first. ;)

glenn the video came out great!

that last shot of the sun was actually the sunrise on the last morning there. it was gorgeous, probably one of the most beautiful i've ever seen in person. i followed that shot up with a nice 3lb+ on a spinnerbait, which makes it even more incredible!

great job on the vid.
