It really depends how you hit them.

The fish there really tend to group up in key spots. If you find them, you can easily catch 20-40 per day.

I've had days when I've only caught five or six, but the thing that makes it so good is the quality of the average fish.

I'd say on average in the Spring, I catch 10-15 fish in a day.

Main thing is to keep moving until you find them, and then slow down and catch everything you can.

Shad, what kind of numbers can one expect on a typical day?

While I wouldnt mind catching a pig, I would definitely enjoy catching fish on a consistent basis.

You need to steer clear from that line of thinking Wayne.  2 trips to Fork have taught me 1 thing, you can be fishing Ray Scotts backyard, if it's during the spawn, the weather is everything.

we went to Fork on yr 1 with the same thought process as you, relying on our level as fishermen to at least give us a few fish/day, certainly not a skunk.  Heck, so what,...no 10lbr, that's not my goal,...well GOOD THING!! lol.  A 2 lbr took everything but Dynamite.  I could have been fishing somewhere in RI during cold weather season and I would not have known the difference.  This is Lake Fork???  Yup, during a severe cold front during the spawn.  The idea of going during spawn is that there is that chance of a real brag worthy fish.  With those chances come higher odds of a complete shut down, weather forbidding.

Yr 2 , we had similar conditions but nowhere near as harsh.  The bite was tough.  Folks with guides saw their big fish but the avg decent angler would struggle just to put a few in the boat, but they were caught.

The whole moral here is that we go to meet up, catching, is icing on the cake, catching a biggun', makes it that much better.  The primary highlight for many of us who have gone however, even those that caught the big fish, was the camaraderie.  By far.  Just hanging out in person with all the guys we hang out with via cable modem,...it's very cool.  Actually fishing with them and attacking a foreign lake together, well, it's something only our members will ever know.  You guys are gonna have a blast, trust me, big fish or no fish, you'll have a blast.

I hear ya Russ.

Believe me, I realize this trip is bigger than catching fish and exploring a new lake.  I know my memories of this trip are not contingent upon catching fish at Gville.

It would definitely be nice though   ;)

this trip is very tempting. i actually have an unused plane ticket from a cancelled trip i had to california with an ex-girlfriend that i need to use before april (i think...) of this year, and i'm pretty sure i can exchange it for any flight. i'm not sure where i could even fly into or how i'd get to the lake and surrounding area, but i'm going to look into it.

anyone else from MA going to this?

Looks like you're on your own this year, Mike. Cigarlover and I went down last year from Mass., though, and it was a blast. I highly recommend you make it if you can. First-rate people to fish and hang with.

i'm going to look into it. as of right now i have zero information on how to even get my plane ticket. the ex-gf booked the flight and everything, i just gave her the cash for the ticket, and now i'm stuck not knowing a single thing about how to even redeem it, or even what airline it's for. i emailed her after making that last post asking her to send me whatever info she can, hopefully she'll get back to me soon.

HEY?

Just out of curiousity, did anyone notice that the first day of our roadtrip is on Easter Sunday?

I just realized that, it does not affect me but thought I'd mention it.

so i got in touch with the airlines that i had booked my previous tickets through (airtran and delta). airtran was exceptionally helpful in informing me i have a $280 credit with them, while delta has yet to provide me with one bit of info in regards to the ticket i had cancelled or the credit i am supposed to have with them.

regardless, i have to use the airtran credit before may of 2008, which means i'd very much like to attend this trip. i've got a bunch of questions i'm hoping someone in the know can answer for me.

what city is everyone flying into? i'm guessing birmingham. i'd be flying out of either boston, hartford or providence, depending on the city i'd be flying into due to airtran being limited to certain airports.

also, any info on lodging would be great, and if anyone's looking to share a room i'd be willing to do so. i'm 27, i get along with just about everyone, casual drinker, non-smoker, and i don't snore.

i'd also be looking to find a spot on a boat with an experienced angler. i've only gotten into the game this past summer, so i'm fairly new to bassin', but i learn quickly and am respectful of other people's property (meaning i won't spill on your deck, etc.)

if anyone that has any info they'd like to share could either pm me or reply to this post, i'd appreciate it a lot.

*edit* apparently airtran doesn't fly into birmingham, so i might have to fly into atlanta and drive from there. i guess i'll have to see what info delta can give me and maybe book a flight into birmingham with them.

Hey Mike,

Check out the trip website (there's a link in my sig line and the top left corner of every forum page) there's a lot of good information there. If you still have any questions, send me a PM and I will try to help you out.

Glad to see you can make it!

unfortunately the airline i'd be flying on doesn't go to either one of those cities, only memphis which is about a 4-5 hour drive away.

thanks for the suggestion though.

Just bought my plane tickets.  Woo Hoo!

Just a reminder if you're thinking about going - you only have a few weeks left to make your reservation at Guntersville state park.  The deadline is quickly approaching - and we're filling up fast!

Don't wait until it's too late!

even though the trip is still 2 months off, i'm starting to stock up on gear i'll need for the trip. most of my fishing is done with a t-rigged 5" senko or other soft plastic bait, but i do have a couple buzzbaits, spinnerbaits, deep and shallow cranks, an x-rap and jointed shad-rap, about 8 jigs in various sizes (1/4 - 1/2oz) and colors (browns, greens, black and blue), pop'rs and jit-r-bugs, and a bag or two of storm swimbaits. are there any other baits i should be picking up or should what i have suffice? like i said most of my time is spent throwing senko's, hence the small amount of other baits in my arsenal.

from what i've been reading about g'ville in march, spinnerbaits and shallow running cranks are the way to go since most bass are roaming the shallows or 4-8' drop offs, so i guess i should try to have at least a few of each. any other suggestions are more than welcome.

also if there's anything else i'll need for the trip but will probably forget or not think to bring at all, please let me know. i just picked up rain gear today, but i'm sure there's going to be a few other simple things that i'll totally forget about (sunglasses, sunscreen, etc.).

thanks guys.

I can't believe I have to post this.............

As of today, I now cannot attend the roadtrip. Words cannot say how dissapointed I am not to be able to meet everyone, fish a great lake, and bail on roadwarrior since he has been so gracious to invite me to stay with him.

When I arrived for work today my Chief of Police informed me that I was choosen to attend a Field Training Officer Supervsior class scheduled for March 24-26. This class is only being offered one time in this state this year. Basically, I will supervise the officers that train new recruit officers. It's a good career acheivement for me but it leaves me void of the anticipation I had thinking about Guntersville.

Hope everyone catches one for me, I'll be daydreaming of fishing with you while at the class.  :-/

bassnleo, That almost stinks.

Mike you might want to get a couple of crawfish colored lipless crankbaits to.

Mike:

we should have a lot of fish up shallow around the beds on inside grass lines and around stumps and docks (1-5 ft).

You can catch those fish on senkos, soft plastic lizards, tubes, finessee worms. Also, I caught a bunch of nice ones up shallow last year on the Chatterbait in white. Rattle baits in red and shad colors are a mainstay at Guntersville in Feb- April period too, but I prefer it out a bit deeper over the grass in 4-8 ft.

Depending on the weather, we are likely to have a lot of fish in pre-spawn mode too. These fish will be staged on points and in the deeper grass beds in the bays and creeks. Most of these fish are found in 6-10 ft of water, and my favorite baits for them are rattle baits, deep diving CB's (SK series 5 or DT 10's), and tandem spinnerbaits in 3/8 or 1/2 oz.

Only other baits you should need is topwater in case that's happening yet.
