CFFF 1.5 Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 We had our last tournament today before the classic at Lake Monroe and it turned out to be a pretty good day. The morning started out cool, but quickly warmed up to the mid to hi 70's. The skies were clear and the wind was non existent. There were an enormous amount of speck fishermen out on Lake Monroe. We had about 12 boats participating in this month's tournament and there were 6 boats that brought fish to the scales. The 1st place team brought in 4 fish weighing a little over 8 lbs. The second place team had 4 fish weighing 7.25 lbs. The 3rd place team had 3 fish weighing 7.10 lbs, and the 4th place team had 2 fish weighing 4.5 lbs. Big Bass was weighed in at 3.88 lbs. We took 4th place but didn't win any money. We started out the day fishing topwater in a small shallow cove. We weren't getting any strikes and quickly switched to soft plastic jerk baits. My partner had one on, but eventually got off about half way to the boat. We never got a good look at the fish but it was a pretty decent sized fish. I then continued to follow up his miss with a miss of my own. I was throwing a Spro BBZ-1 4" Shad and had a fish following it to the boat. I gave the bait a jerk and then let it sit. As soon as the bait stopped moving the fish struck the bait, but apparently only had the tail in its mouth because the hook set came up empty. We then moved out to the opening of the cove and switched to crankbaits. We one after the other caught two nice keepers. The first going about 2 lbs and the second about 2.5 lbs. After those two fish we moved around to the outside bank of the cove where we had been seeing a lot of action. We decided to fish spinnerbaits because the fish seemed to want something fast moving and with the shallow water and abundance of pads this seemed like the best bait. We only got one strike in this area but it was a good one. I was throwing a 3/8 oz Hart Spinnerbait and as soon as I had the fish hooked it wrapped me around the pads and my 12lb test line broke with ease. All in all we had a pretty good day. We could have easily won this tournament if we had caught all the fish we missed. Next Saturday we have our Club Classic. Quote
