32251 Posted November 5, 2008 Posted November 5, 2008 I did it yesterday for several hours. Caught a 4, 8 and a 9+ pounder. Made me start rethinking all this "running and gunning" all over the lake. Over a period of time, don't fish move about to feed and do whatever fish do. If you have caught fish off a spot before, won't you have just as good a chance if you fish that spot relentlessly for an extended period of time rather than making a couple of casts and then moving on? I caught all my fish off one lure even though I tried several. Quote
Captain Rhino Posted November 5, 2008 Posted November 5, 2008 A lot of times, big bass work together in "packs" to school shad or other types of bait fish. I'm not sure how long a couple of hours is, but it sounds very likely that you had a school of big bass in one area that you were fortunate enough to hook in-to. Beautiful fish you got there in your picture! Quote
fivesixone Posted November 5, 2008 Posted November 5, 2008 I think it really depends on the water you're fishing and the bait fish that are in that water... I shore fish from a bunch of different spots on my neighborhood lake, and last week, I fished the same exact spot for about 4 days.. Here's the results: http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1225481786 Also caught 3 more there the day after. What does it mean? I have no idea... But runnin' and gunnin' isn't always gonna be the best... I was also using the same bait most of the time, using the same presentation... Nice fish by the way! Any more pics?? Quote
Super User Dan: Posted November 5, 2008 Super User Posted November 5, 2008 I know what you mean. I've seen fish just swimming around from place to place in a seemingly random manner. It seems that if you stay in one spot, at some point those fish will come to the spot you are fishing. I don't think that is the case all the time, but I know there are times where it does seem to be a logical idea. Quote
IMPY03 Posted November 5, 2008 Posted November 5, 2008 I did the same yesterday, Me and a freind were at a pond using the same color/size spinnerbait and I caught 7 and he only caught 1. Six of the fish I caught were in the same area and I fished it for about an hour as he walked around the pond not catching anything. Go figure. Quote
IDbasser Posted November 14, 2008 Posted November 14, 2008 I think I remember reading one of your posts that you haven't been bass fishing very long, I think you are doing quite well. Quote
Super User Sam Posted November 14, 2008 Super User Posted November 14, 2008 Location, location, location. That is part of the formula for bass fishing. Some bass have their "milk run" where they move for specific places to other specific places during the day and week. Other bass will hold to a specific cover or structure while others just roam around in a random manner. This is why the guys want big and powerful motors on their bass boats so they can be first at the places they know the fish hang out. As for fishing one specific area for a long period of time, you can do this or fish it for a time and then come back in an hour or two and fish it again. To really fish a "spot" you will need to throw a variety of baits from different angles. Maybe start wtih a topwater; then go to a crankbait and a spinnerbait; followed by a wacky Senko - drop shot- or shaky head rig in addition to your standard Texas rig. You can throw a jig and pig, too. Fish the spot from various angles and throw each lure or plastic at least 15 to 20 times. If they are not hungry you may be able to generate a reaction bite. If you do not get a bite, remember the patterns you threw and then go to your next location and start all over again. Once you get bit you will know the pattern, lure and presentation they are seeking that day. Continue following your pattern as you move from place to place. The secret is to be patient and try different lures, depths, colors and presentations to find out what the bass want to eat. Once you find the "pattern" you are set for the day, unless you are fishing a tidal body of water and then you will have to change your presentations based on the tides. This is what makes bass fishing a challenge. If we all could go out and throw anything and catch bass then everyone would bass fish, and there would not be the challenge or the Bait Monkey to help us along. Great story and pics so you are doinging something right. Just continue doing what you are doing and look for more places were the bass will hang out. But don't tell anyone as these will be your secret places. Quote
32251 Posted November 14, 2008 Author Posted November 14, 2008 I think I remember reading one of your posts that you haven't been bass fishing very long, I think you are doing quite well. I have been so happy with my bass fishing. I used to fish so much in the 60s when I was in high school, but I never fished for bass. I did not even fish one day for about 35 years after that. I am approaching 60 years old and it's about time I started enjoying something. Unfortunatly my brothers very ill health has been an impetus for my fishing. I have been driving over to Alabama from Atlanta every two weeks and hanging out with him. He lives on a nice 70 acre lake that he and I used to fish when we were just little kids. We spend as much time as we can out on the water which for him is only maybe a couple of hours a day. When he is resting/sleeping, I go myself and walk the bank. I have caught some beautiful fish there. Fishing for me is so relaxing and theraputic. I have also really appreciated all the info and help here on this forum. It is really amazing what you can learn here. Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted November 16, 2008 Super User Posted November 16, 2008 There's an old saying that goes like this.. "Never leave fish to go find fish" Quote
BASS fisherman Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 Like Sam said, it's about location. At my last tournament, me and my partner found a spot and fished it all day long. I ended up with first place and 15lbs 11oz. If your fishing a good piece of structure or cover, then I say yes, you could fish it for a while with good results. We started off at the spot and ended the day at the spot. We both caught a limit, and I culled another 3 fish. So throughout the day there was atleast 13 fish on this one spot. I am sure there was many more too. We both caught fish off the same lure, but he used a different color than I did. Quote
