Tokyo Tony Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 Hey guys, I have some questions about this bait. I'm looking to get more into swimbaiting next year, starting with the MS Slammer. As a disclaimer, I fish mainly in CT and NH. Honestly, in the Northeast, would it be best to get the 9 or the 7? Most of the other posts I see recommend the 9, and while I can definitely see that for CA or TX, for example, I wonder if the 9 might result in fewer bites from good 3-4 lb fish. Do you think the 9 would be that much more appealing to really big fish to be worth sacrificing some good 3-5 lbers? I know that a 3 lb fish can attack a 9 inch slammer, but I don't think you can say that a 9 won't result in fewer strikes. Would you recommend the original, the x2, or the x3? I think the x3 looks kind of stupid, but the x2 looks absolutely delicious. It seems like the action on the x2 would be a good bit better than the original. Colors? I'm thinking of starting with a white one and a black one (for night fishing). Would you recommend otherwise? I'm kind of torn about the 7 or the 9 though. What do you guys think, specifically Northerners who have had success with these baits? Thanks. Quote
Dorkus Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 I honestly don't really see a huge difference in bites between the 7" and 9" so I would just get one of each. I've caught bass that are the same size as the baits, sometimes a lot of small fish will kill bigger baits if the action is right. I would say that 2-4lb fish are the average MS bass on both sizes. The 2X I find better for twitching/ more noise. The extra joint gives that clacking sound that calls up fish. The Original has better action IMO, but I think the amount of joints is personal preference. Try both and see which one you like better. The best part is that if you don't like a MS you can resell it and it will get bought in a heartbeat. All colors of MS work, no doubt. Again, personal preference. Some better night colors IMO Black beauty, Dark trout, Purple Nitro, Strong Red. Day: Perch, light trout, Bluegill Quote

You're after the larger fish in the lake. So I wouldn't be too concerned about that. I've caught quite a 3-4lbers on the 9. I've caught 2lbers on 8" swimbaits. So it does happen, but I'd still go with the 9 regardless of water I'm fishing. As for color, and joints, go with what you have the most confidence in. If you're serious about it, you're going to be throwing it a lot, and it's tough to consistently throw it when you lack confidence . Quote

There are great baits for less money. But.... I am into the bigger swimbaits after the "two-fa" day I had last week. But I do not think that they should be the only lure thrown. Primus Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 I am by no means an expert on Big Swimbaits, but I bought a 7" in the Baby Bass color. I caught a couple (3-4 lbers ironically), had a miss from a huge one, with the limited amounted of time that I put into fishing it I was impresssed enough to buy the 9" Slammer which I'll be throwing next season because living in Michigan our season will be done within the next 3-4 weeks. Next year I plan on giving these baits a good workout, I'm not looking for numbers but hoping this will attract bites from a larger class of fish. The retrieves I've tried so far have been waking, twitching and a slow subsurface swim. I've also combined twitching and waking in the same retrieve. Quote
