Couldn't fish today and as usual when I can't fish, I'm thinking about it or remembering fond times. We all have favorite fishing memories and here is one from my distant past that makes me chuckle and thought it might give you a smile as well....Feel free to comment or share your own.

Years ago, A new friend and his young son went fishing with me for their very first fishing trip ever . My previous outings in this area were very productive flipping jigs and craws in extremely thick brush and timber on a flooded creek channel. My success level on larger fish had increased with each outing so I was keyed up and loaded for bear....

You can imagine the sights and the sounds to my friends young boy who had never been in a boat or even seen a bass before this time. As I maneuvered the boat over logs and thru the flooded timber, he jabbered with excitement and intrigue at this new adventurous journey he was on.

As I got closer to the "Zone" I could tell that the fish were there and active because the smaller brush was moving and there were obvious feeding swirls coming from beneath the surface all around. The fish were suspended in the brush only a few feet below and in an extremely aggressive mood.

The more observations I explained to my friends, the more excited the young boy got. I had set up a Tx rigged craw for the him and flipped it out in a busy spot, then handed him the rod and said "hold on tight, jerk it and reel'em in" . He followed with a beautiful hook set, squealed to the top of his lungs and pee'd his pants....all of this as he reeled in a 3 1/2 pound bass. His Dad was embarrassed for him and said he would help him change his pants but the little boy said "it's okay Daddy, it'll dry and I won't pee on the next one".

Just as I had hoped and anticipated "IT WAS ON". Both of them were getting slammed and the Dad after catching several nice fish, wound up just helping his boy with all of the action. I was standing on the deck and some of the smaller fish on my hook sets would fly completely over the boat from one side to the other and a bit more often than I had anticipated.

As luck would have it there were also several large fish in the mix and I wasn't using a net so many of them would jerk their way free from my grip and wind up thrashing all over the bottom of the boat and sometimes extremely close to the little boy....I would apologize to him and he would quickly reply "No problem, I like it".

At the end of the day the young boy told his mother that he wanted a fishing rod and a motorcycle helmet for his birthday, she quickly replied that he didn't have a motorcycle and he told her "Not for a motorcycle Mom, it's for the flying fish when I go fishin' with Big O again".

Now Anthony is 35 yrs old and is a die hard bass fisherman and his parents remind of that often..Flying Fish.

Great story. Causes me to remember the first time I took my granddaughter, at the age of three.  We were fishing a small pond and she caught several bass and a few catfish. Afterward took her for ice cream and she was telling everybody " I caught a MISTER LARGEMOUTH." Fond but somewhat sad memories as I have not seen her for over a year and a half because our daughter and son-in-law are not talking to either my wife or me and live about 500 miles away. But,anyway I have a picture with her and me and her first bass. I see it every day and am reminded by the biggest smile of happiness what a joy introducing a kid to fishing can be.

Toolpush, I can relate to your story with your daughter and can tell you that as you communicate those same memories to her in whatever form necessary, it hits home and makes the greatest positive impact....

A simple letter shows that you again took the time. A simple apology for no matter what, shows that your love for her is still firmly intact and you won't allow anything to diminish it. A simple "I am the luckiest Dad in the world because of you" will always renew fond memories from the past. And A simple I love you will never fall on deaf ears.

real cool story.  nothing like fishing with a kid to keep things in perspective and remind you what fishing is really supposed to be about.

Reminds me of my first fishing trip with my oldest son when he was 3 or 4. I had bought him his own tackle box - the one that comes equipped with some basic fishing lures. We hit the pond and caught some bream on worms which he thought was great. However he really wanted to try the shiny lures in his new tackle box.

I tried explaining how the lures have to rigged a certain way and tried convincing him he should wait until he was older. He wouldn't hear of that and so as instructed I threaded a purple plastic worm on the bream hook below his bobber (wacky style). He tossed it out and sure enough about 30 seconds later he was reeling in his first bass!

Shows how much I know ::) I think the wave action really gave that plastic worm some wiggle under that bobber and the bass loved it.

Hey moloch16, the wave action might have had something to do with it but it first took your childs desire and then your gentle hand to make it happen.

You're a great Dad and all children should be so lucky....
