IMPY03 Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 So last sunday me and one of my friends head up to my uncles 5 acre pond in the county to do a little catfishing. After we get there me and my friend tie on a small hook and cork and begin to fish with worms for small bream to use for bait later on in the night (BTW we got there around 6). So after a while I get tired of catching lots of little punks so I tie on a rapala shallow runner and catch 2 dinks within an hour and am not satisfied. So I'm looking through all the "junk" lures that I never use or never had any luck on and pick up a 3/4 ounce spoon and tie it on. My buddy begins to laugh and sais throw it as far as you can and so I did quiet a few times and while he is bursting out in laughter I continue to cast into deeper water and its now around 8 and its getting almost dark so I'm just swimming this spoon (keep in mind I've never used one before and didnt know they were meant for jigging ) and I hook something big...I thought I have hooked a small flathead cat but just then I see this nice looking LMB jump and my friend stops laughing and is now in disbelief I actually hooked a fish and comes over to see. I guessing its around 3.5 - 4.5 lb...you tell me what ya think this picture IMO does the fish no justice in size but its all I got. I think I might start using spoons more often in deep water ;D Quote
Super User Sam Posted August 1, 2008 Super User Posted August 1, 2008 Good story. Shows that you need to amend your presentations during your outings. To obtain an good estimate of the fish's weight use the following formula: Length x Length x Grith = Pounds 1200 Knowing the length of your arms, you can interperlate the length and grith of the bass in the photo and then promulgate the estimated weight. Next time you go out in the evening try a topwater, like a black buzzbait. Have fun. Quote
Mepps Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 Nice fish there! I'd say somewhere between 2-3lbs. Quote
Eddie Munster Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 Nice one man. Probably around 2.5-3 lbs. The angle is a little off and you can't tell how fat she is. Quote
JShrock07 Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 Nice looking bass!!! I'd go with around 2.5-3 lbs as well! Quote
daviscw Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 Nice fish dude, I'd say 2-3lbs. Keep at it! Quote
Joshawa Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 I have a couple jigging spoons I got when I was little and have never seriously given them a shot. I'm glad to see you had some success with something new, maybe you'll have to add that one to your arsenal. Quote
Super User Paul Roberts Posted August 3, 2008 Super User Posted August 3, 2008 Not going to guess on the weight -Weight is over-rated. Cool story though. The right lure, in the right place, at the time, is measured in moments. Quote
avid Posted August 3, 2008 Posted August 3, 2008 Not going to guess on the weight -Weight is over-rated. . If by "overrated" you mean that anglers always estimate high, then I couldn't agree more. If your saying that measuring the size of a fish by it's weight is over rated than I'm guessing you would you rather catch 10 one pounders than one ten pounder. Quote
