BUCKEYEone Posted July 28, 2008 Posted July 28, 2008 I'm a relatively inexperienced bass angler, still figuring things out the hard way and learning something new every time I'm on the water. I was out this past weekend, found a nice quiet cove and was throwing a new 1/4oz. lipless crank, caught one crappie, tossed it back in, when I THOUGHT I snagged grass. I gave it a good tug and started reeling in when I noticed I didnt feel the wobble of the lure at the end of the line...right then what would have been my PB Largemouth came flipping out of the water with my crank rattling along with him. I would guess it was about a 4-5 pound fish, which is better than any LMB I have landed thus far. I hated to leave there having lost the lure, fish, and left that fish with a treble hook in his lip. After seeing him try to throw the lure a few times, I tried to re-catch him, knowing it wasnt going to happen...and after 40 minutes it was time to head back to the ramp and call it a day. Lesson learned: dont throw a crank in a big-fish spot on a ML spin rod spooled with 8lb mono that hadn't been re-spooled in a month or so(usually my crappie rig) ahhh, what a day! Quote
Joshawa Posted July 28, 2008 Posted July 28, 2008 Aw man what a heart breaker... but you'll get him next time, and he will be bigger Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted July 28, 2008 Super User Posted July 28, 2008 Live and learn. You won't make that same mistake again. Quote
Big-O Posted July 28, 2008 Posted July 28, 2008 Ooooh, hate it when that happens but just think, now you have an idea of just what is possible when you're fishin', You'll be ready next time. Big O Quote
rondef Posted July 28, 2008 Posted July 28, 2008 Sorry to hear that you lost your PB. I lost mine last weekend when he threw my spinnerbait so I feel your pain. Just go back there and go get him. Quote
thetr20one Posted July 28, 2008 Posted July 28, 2008 That sucks! I was in a tourney Sunday and missed what was certainly the $500 big bass and only weighed in 4 average fish. What really sucks for me is I fished a different tourney on the same lake the day before and cashed an 11th place check and didn't miss a strike all day culling along the way. I still have visions of that fish. That is bass fishing though! Things happen! By the way I missed that fish on a spinnerbait with a trailer hook, I thought it had landed in a patch of weeds and give it a little snap and either he just had the blades or something maybe a mouthful of weeds. We didn't fully connect but it did clear the water and let me see what I had just missed. Then the ride home sucked too! Man I was on a roll too that would have made 4 strait tourneys with me in the money. I GUESS THAT IS BASS FISHING FOR YA!!!!! GOOD LUCK NEXT TIME !!!!!!! Quote
BUCKEYEone Posted July 28, 2008 Author Posted July 28, 2008 I'd had some misses that really got to me, but this one was a shot in the pills for sure. Quote
BassChump Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 Same thing happened to me yesterday. My PB is a 5 pound LM. While fishing, my reel started messing up. Not wanting to tear it apart and fix the problem, I grabbed my trout rod with 6 pound mono on it. 3 casts later I hook into something BIG. I loosen my drag so not to snap it off but it didn't work. After about a minute of gingerly playing this fish, the line finally breaks as it takes off. I didn't get to see it but there is no doubt in my mind, it would have easily been my biggest fish to date. Like you guys say, "that's bass fishing". Quote
