Super User Sam Posted July 24, 2008 Super User Posted July 24, 2008 OK, I finally figure out how to rig the Rage Rail Shad via the post on the forum and I stop by the local pond on my way home to see its action. This is a pond where the bass have seemed to have disappeared and I have not caught a bass out of this pond in over three months. So I park the SUV, get out and remember that I can only throw the Rage Tail Shad a few times as the orange juice is on the back seat, melting. First cast, nice action. Impressive. Second cast - first a bass hits at it and misses; then a second bass hits at it and misses about 10 feet from the first strike. Third cast - another bass hits at it and misses. Of course, I am not planning for anything to hit it so I was not in the "cross their eyes" mode, especiallyl since I was still in my pretty business attire and dress shoes. The bass just hit the Rage Tail Shad to kill it and I did not miss a hookset. ;D Sure. That's what happened. This Rage Tail Shad was the one I tried many ways to rig and tore the nose and put some other holes in it so it was not sitting perfectly on my Owner 5/0 Extra Wide Hook. But it worked! Will throw it on the Chick River tomorrow and then again on Sunday. Man, what a lure. Quote
Hooked_On_Bass Posted July 24, 2008 Posted July 24, 2008 Hey Sam, It's good to hear you like the bait. I just bought 3 packs of them. Two Green Pumpkin Chart. and one Silver Bling; I have to see what all the fuss was about. Can you point me to the post regarding rigging these little suckers? Thanks a bunch! Quote
Hooked_On_Bass Posted July 24, 2008 Posted July 24, 2008 Never mind...............found it! :-[ ;D Quote
JCrzy4Bass Posted July 25, 2008 Posted July 25, 2008 Hey Sam, just a piece of advice. Some guys like the 5' hook. 3 is definately too small, but 4' is where it is at. You get the best tail action with the 4 because the 5 sits too close to the tail in most instances and hinders the ability a bit. Just in cases that I have seen though. If your getting the action you want, don't change a thing. I can't remember if the guys in the Strike King video on their site use a 4' or a 5'. But I think they also preach 4's. Could be mistaken. Either way I'm sure it's not a HUGE hinderance to the bait's ability. Plus side of the five is it probably gives you a bit more room for error or a slight better hook up ratio. Never used it though... just heard things from guys who have. Post pics when you catch that first hawg! Quote
Super User Sam Posted July 25, 2008 Author Super User Posted July 25, 2008 Thanks for the info, guys. Will also use the 4/0 Daiichi EWG hooks and see how that may change the action. Will let you know. Quote
rondef Posted July 25, 2008 Posted July 25, 2008 Sam, you are going to love the shad, they work well. Don't forget to try the toads, I have been tearing it up with them. Quote
OH-bass614 Posted July 25, 2008 Posted July 25, 2008 i wish mine worked like that but i think im doin sumthin wrong...how are u retrieveing ive tried several things without luck Quote
rondef Posted July 25, 2008 Posted July 25, 2008 I use a gamakatsu 4/0EWG hook and I reel them in slowly, lust fast enough for the legs to kick up some water. If you are having problems with them running correctly try using a weighted hook 1/16 oz. I am not experiencing any problems with mine but I have seen people post stating that they are having issues. I insert my hook in the round spot on the nose of the toad, bring it out through the bottom just a little way down and then feed the hook into the belly, through the back and then skin hook it. Quote
Mrs. Matstone Posted July 25, 2008 Posted July 25, 2008 Glad to see that you had such a great response with the shad. I have had alot of fun with this bait myself. I think it is funny you were fishing in your business attire too. ;D I have been guilty of that myself. A few times I have passed by a spot that I cannot seem to resist casting my line. I will admit it must look funny when I am tossing a line in a skirt and heels. ;D Quote
JShrock07 Posted July 25, 2008 Posted July 25, 2008 I love fishing the shad!!!! They are with out a doubt the replacement for my buzzbaits!!! Quote
NEbassMaster Posted July 25, 2008 Posted July 25, 2008 I will admit it must look funny when I am tossing a line in a skirt and heels. ;D And where do you fish The Rage Tail Shad is awesome! I use 4/0 EWG and the action is unreal...the hits are unreal also. I tossed the Smokey Shad in a swamp near where I live and within seconds of starting to retrieve it, a nice 2.5lb'r hammered it...during a moderate rain storm mind you. Quote
