IdahoLunkerHunter Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 Just have to vent. Went out with the wife last night bank fishin'. She did her usual crappie fishing and I was out fishing a culvert that has primarily landed me 2-4 lbers. I grabbed my spin/med action pole and went down to the water. It was about 8:30pm and I rigged up a 1/4 oz jig and a 9" junebug floater finesse. First cast I got a tap and I set the hook and broke the line. Oh ya i'm using 14lb mono, spiderwire and I end up having to change line everytime I go out because it just doesn't stay strong, it becomes a little brittle after 10 hours of fishing. (Does anyone have any suggestions on the best line I can buy on a big spool, bulk) So I ended up taking about 10 yards off the line feeling for abrasions and didn't find any. So I threw back and the tap came back. Set the hook and line just started ripping. Fought the fish for about 15 minutes because everytime I got it about 5 feet from shore it just took off again. I got it about 2 feet from shore and I saw it, 8+ lbs. I was already counting my chickens and tightened the drag just a bit and BAM! line snapped. Sorry to anyone that was near me and the profanitity that was heard. Oh well thats the game of fishing. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted July 17, 2008 Super User Posted July 17, 2008 Wow! I guess you don't need a lecture, but stories about fish breaking a line is my #1 pet peeve. Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted July 17, 2008 Super User Posted July 17, 2008 Sorry you lost it because of crappy line. a good super braid would have got you that hog. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted July 17, 2008 Super User Posted July 17, 2008 Sorry you lost it because of crappy line. a good super braid would have got you that hog. Or #6 Yo-Zuri original Hybrid, Ultra Soft or just about any line with the proper drag setting. 8-) Quote
joshuaryan Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 I use Power Pro 40 lb test and haven't had the line break with a fish on, EVER. It's been like two-three years and I don't remember ever having to replace the line yet. :::knocking on wood:::: It's worth paying extra money for the good stuff. I mean, what's the use of investing so much time fishing only to have the line break when you have one on? Quote
IdahoLunkerHunter Posted July 17, 2008 Author Posted July 17, 2008 Thanks for the suggestions on the yo zuri, just ordered two 600yrd 8# and 12#. Hope this might help. Best Regards Quote
JCrzy4Bass Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 Idaho, I hear you buddy. That is tough man. I lost a nice one a couple weeks back and the guys here made me feel good about it as far as getting back out there and finding him again. Like most say, and I'm sure you know it... go on back there, you know where his home is now. Or her home... whatever. Also, just a heads up, whatever line you decide to use buy yourself some KVD line conditioner man. This stuff keeps your line spooled tight, casting better, makes it come smoother off the reel and normally keeps it pretty free of abrasions unless you have some beat up guides. Check out the threads on it in the tackle section. Plenty of great responses to it. And... it's proven. That's the last thing you really need to check, if you have been using any tough line in the past on that rod the guides could have some groves that are damaging line if you are having that common of an issue. Check it out, might be worth the look. If you haven't already. Sorry about the loss of the fish man. I know that sucks... least you got to see her surface. Musta been sweet to see big bertha layin' up for ya. Quote
Super User Sam Posted July 17, 2008 Super User Posted July 17, 2008 Idaho, Sorry for your experience. I can really feel your pain. I still have nightmares about the one on Lake Gaston that took my favorite Bandit 200 Shad crankbait and took off for Chicago. ;D Just Crazy for Bass made some excellent suggestions, especially about checking your line guides. Take a Q-Tip and run it around all of your rod's line guides. If any of the cotton sticks to the line guides then you have a nick. Also, as Road Warrior said, check your drag. That was my problem when she decided to make a run and my line broke on Lake Gaston. I plum forgot to check the drag. Talk about dumb. I was too excited about throwing at the grass on the point we came upon and just casted out without doing my homework on the boat. And to support what Just Crazy for Bass wrote, go back. She is still around the area. Keep trying to catch her. Good luck and let us know what happens. Quote
tyrius. Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 tightened the drag just a bit and BAM! line snapped. Why would you change the drag setting while fighting the fish? Quote
paul. Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 that bites. hate you lost that fish man. my experience is that any spiderwire product is just flat out inferior. maybe some other folks have had good experiences with it, but not me. anyway, the drag issue seems to have been the primary problem. my suggestion would be to never, never, never tighten the drag on a short line. drag settings that are adequate with plenty of line out (because of line stretch) will cause a break off on a short line. the limited amount of line just can't stretch enough. you can pretty much bet with a big fish, you are usually gonna get one final surge when they see you, the boat, or the bank. so if anything, you need to loosen your drag as a big fish comes near. you'll get her next time man. it's better to have fought a monster and lost than not to have fought one at all. good luck in your next battle. Super User Grey Wolf Posted July 18, 2008 Super User Posted July 18, 2008 You had her on for 15 minutes?? Good hook set. Why so long????????????????? Why would you not have the drag set correct before you started????????????? What kind of rod and reel were you using??????????????????? Quote
JCrzy4Bass Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 tightened the drag just a bit and BAM! line snapped. Why would you change the drag setting while fighting the fish? I've done this with a couple of 2lb + smallies. It actually helps get them to your feet when wading in a river with decent current. Never had to for large mouth but for those stubborn bass that just keep making runs and so forth I've heard it can be helpful once you've worked em' for a while. Though I know there are some long timers in here that NEVER support doing something like this. Just my two cents though. It has helped me in the past to at least give myself a second to lip em' when they are nearby momentarily. Quote
Newman12Fan Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 Try some Yo Zuri Hybrid 8-). FYI, this was on sale at my walmart last night. $10 for a 600 yard spool. I bought some and change my line last night. I went out for 2 hours and never had my line break, of course I did't catch anything Quote
