Mrs. Matstone Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 I took a 45 minute drive the other day to Dicks Sporting Goods to pick up something new I wanted to try. It was the Rage shad. All I can say is it was awesome. I chose the green pumpkin with the chartreuse belly. The bait held up very well I was still using the same one for 2 days with the exception of the very first one I put on because a fish took the entire thing and left me with my line flappin in the breeze. This whole topwater experience was very new to me but it is one that I have been wanting to try. I can honestly say that I had a blast. This has got to be one of my new favorites for sure. The first time that I had a fish blow up on it scared the heck out me. I almost fell in the lake. My husband thought that was pretty amusing though. I could hear him laughing at me all the way down the shoreline. Truthfully I think he was waiting for that to happen. The most difficult thing I found about fishing topwater is not to yank the bait right out of the fishes mouth when it hits the lure because it is so startling. I need more practice.. Yesterday we fished this place for a while and had great luck but we did not get any pics of the fish because it was pouring. Today we had overcast skies with a few passing rainshowers which I welcomed because it has been so hot and humid lately that I can't hardly stand it. I did manage to keep myself from jumping in the water to cool off today though. This is good, usually I always end up in the water at some point. I focused my attention on the weedbeds dragging the shad either right though them or on the edges of them. The fish seemed to be out in the deeper water. I don't think I noticed any of them cruising the shoreline. Here are some of the fish that we caught. I hope you guys had the chance to get out and do some fishing too and if your planning on going soon all I have to say is TOPWATER IS GREAT! Quote

Big-O Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 On the Rage Tail Shad, I recommend a 4/0 EWG heavy wire hook. If you go to my my website and to the Shad product page, there are hooking instructions that might help you out. Also video instruction as well. Once you got it, you got it. As for the arm I have tendonitis from fishing. I really should be taking a rest but I am having a little trouble with that. Your daughter teach you guys this stuff? JCrzy4Bass Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 Hey Mrs. Matstone, Always great to get a new addition in the tackle, especially topwater. I was pumped about these topwater plastics when I saw the first show on tv back in January premiering the baits. The bass were slamming em' and the guys were just tearing it up. My dad and I bought them to give it a change of pace instead of always throwing your usual large topwater like buzzbaits. The shad's action is similar but that tail flap really drives the bass nuts. One thing I find is that the bass are pretty curious with this bait and they will follow it and make a wake for a while and not hit until your bait is close to the boat or the shore. It is SO HARD to not set the hook early with these, but if you wait too long the fish is gone lol. Definately takes practice. I'm in your boat as far as needing more time to adapt to this new lure. But one thing is for sure, it's definately effective! Good luck on the next few tries. Tight lines! Quote
