TofuMaster Posted November 1, 2008 Posted November 1, 2008 Are snaps or snap swivels that effective? Based on your personal experience, have they been catching you more fish ? Does it vary by species, size, color etc. ? Any recommendation would be appreciated. Good Bites to all ! Quote
daviscw Posted November 1, 2008 Posted November 1, 2008 I had several open up on me so I quit using them. A lot of people like to use them for cranks though. Quote
Stringjam Posted November 1, 2008 Posted November 1, 2008 Forget snap swivels. Snaps by themselves are great for crankbaits, jerkbaits, and walking topwaters. I use them in place of a split ring. Tying directly to the line-tie on a wiggling / wobbling hard bait will inhibit the action. Either tie directly to a split ring or use a snap. Some guys tie a loop knot (Rapala Knot). I've tried it, and I don't care for it......just my experience. I prefer small, lightweight snaps like the Berkley #1 CrossLock. You won't pull a CrossLock apart. Smaller Duo-Lock snaps easily pull apart. There ya go.....my opinion. Quote
Super User Marty Posted November 1, 2008 Super User Posted November 1, 2008 I've used the small duolock snaps for years without problems. I use them for my convenience and don't know if they catch more or less fish, but I fish them with confidence because I don't think they deter strikes in any way. Quote
Super User Sam Posted November 2, 2008 Super User Posted November 2, 2008 Use snaps on crankbaits. Do not use the ones with the swivels. They allow cranks to work better. They make changing baits faster and easier. Just my two-cents. Quote
adclem Posted November 3, 2008 Posted November 3, 2008 So, snaps with no swivels are ok for crank baits and top water baits? That will sure making changing lures out quicker and easier. Later, Quote
Super User Raul Posted November 3, 2008 Super User Posted November 3, 2008 So, snaps with no swivels are ok for crank baits and top water baits?Later, Yes, as long as you don 't snap it to the split ring on the bait, snapping to the split ring creates a double joint, your bait wobbles to one side when it 's supposed to wobble to the other and when it 's supposed to wobble to it doesn 't wobble. Snap/swivel combinations are a must when you fish with in-line spinners, specially when you fish with spinning gear, the line twist is terrible. Quote

I use them for every thing but platics and jigs. Never had one open. I use Sampo. Makes chaning lures a snap ;D Stay awy from BPS brand, eagle claw or other cheaper brands. Make sure to re-tie just as often as if not using them. I use the size 52 on my frog/buzzbait rod and have hauled several 6+ pounders out of the thickest stuff carrying 5 pounds of weeds without a problem Quote

Super User Raul Posted November 3, 2008 Super User Posted November 3, 2008 Thanks for the info.Later, Just remember, the use of a snap to quickly change your lures is not a license to be lazy and not check the condition of your line on a regular basis to check for signs of abrassion and/or wear. People think that 's so kool you can change lures quickly that forget one of the most basic aspects of fishing: The only link between you and the fish is the line and it 's only as good as the line you are using as a link. adclem Posted November 3, 2008 Posted November 3, 2008 Believe me I check my line very often, even when not changing lures. I am very aware of how important your line and your knot is. Later, Quote
