Super User grimlin Posted July 6, 2008 Super User Posted July 6, 2008 I was fishing longside the bank and across the little dam there is a park on the other side.Well at 11:30am about 50 yards by 20 yards wide an entire wave of every single fish came to surface as they acted like they were attacking top water baits. It was like thunder and every single fish in that 50 by 20 yard rectangle area just went frigging nuts! It lasted maybe 2-4 seconds...and just went dead calm!As it never even happened....I didn't see any floaters in the mayhem or anybody in that little area fishing either. what could it have been? Super User Sam Posted July 6, 2008 Super User Posted July 6, 2008 Would it be possible that a big fish chased them up there to the surface? I have seen bluegills do what LBH said but they stay on top of the water for more than a few seconds while they feed. You do see some strange things when you go fishing. Can't wait to hear what Micro or the other biologists have to say. Quote

Me too,i'm curious to what might have set that off.It was one of the strangest thing i ever saw.It wasn't just bluegills,i know i saw some carps and a few smaller to medium size bass in the mix. I'll tell ya one thing though...fishing just sucked after that. Not a single bite. Quote
Super User fishinfiend Posted July 6, 2008 Super User Posted July 6, 2008 I saw a a school of bass do the same thing to a school of shad . I have never seen this happen before in freshwater and it reminded me of a school of bonitas or jacks. To bad they all went down before we got to them :'( Quote
Bass Smacker Posted July 6, 2008 Posted July 6, 2008 We call them boils here. It happens when the bass chase the smaller fish to the surface. Then it looks like the water is boiling. If you ever see it agene tri tossing a spook in the boil and hang on Quote
skillet Posted July 6, 2008 Posted July 6, 2008 Went camping with the family for a weekend at small lake in Ark. once. The whole weekend bass were chasing shad to the top in one place or another. Would only last very short time. At the end of the weekend was taking boat back to ramp to load up for trip home. Suddenly it happened around me ! Had a Devil's Horse tied on one of the rods. Cast into the middle of all this and had a strike almost instantly. Reeling in and had another fish trying to take lure out of first fish's mouth! By the time I had unhooked the fish it was all over . Didn't see any stunned baitfish either. Didn't last long but it was sure an exciting short while ;D... As Ever, skillet Quote
btcprince Posted July 6, 2008 Posted July 6, 2008 i have seen this lots of times here in FL. it happens when large birds fly over and cast a shadow on the water that i guess the fish see and the fish maybe dont know if its an osprey or what. its crazy when it happens and you dont expect it Quote
fisher of bass Posted July 6, 2008 Posted July 6, 2008 maybe they were watching the red sox, yankees game and were practicing the wave. lol j/k Quote
Super User Paul Roberts Posted July 6, 2008 Super User Posted July 6, 2008 Deep in the soul of ever angler worth his/her salt, there lies a great mythical fish that appears occasionally from the deep inky blackness of mystery to keep us in touch with our place in nature. At that moment we resonate with both predator and prey. Or, it could have been Charlie Brown's Great Pumpkin. Same deal LOL. More seriously, I used to fish an awesome pond that held both bass and pike. Twice in the time I fished it I spotted a huge wake that moved water from deep below, and traveled from my place on the shore out into pond center -then disappeared. I always wondered if there wasn't some behemoth pike in there, or maybe the owners had long ago dropped a muskie in. Beaver was the best explanation, but at that time there was no beaver sign anywhere around that pond -they have to eat. And usually I'd see a beaver if they existed in there as I often night fished it. It wasn't one of those long skating wind ripples either (never have figured out how those form so well defined). So whooooo knows what lurks below??? Hopefully it's just a 10lber that eats my Jitterbug ... rather than a 400lber that eats my float tube... :-/ Quote
sodaksker Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 In my area that is typically white bass schooling and attacking bait fish. It is fun to throw your bait in those areas. Quote
