Eddie Munster Posted June 20, 2008 Posted June 20, 2008 Hello fellas, New to site here (nice place BTW) although been bass fishing for 25 years now. I caught the LMB below in a private lake in Georgia on a plastic worm but didn't have a scale with me or a measuring tape. I stand 6' 1" and as you can see I'm doing my best to hold it parallel to my body for scale and NOT extended out towards the camera. By measuring from the middle of my collarbone to the top of my thigh, I figure she was approx. 24" long. Can you guys help me out and venture a guess as to what you think she weighs? On a side note, I caught this beauty on Father's Day in front of my two kids and I did release her. Quote

Eddie Munster Posted June 20, 2008 Author Posted June 20, 2008 2.5 - 3 lbs Most 5 lb largemouth bass have a mouth that an average size man can fit his fist into, seriously. 8-) And me being 6' 1" 205 lbs I'm above average and trust me when I say that my fist could easily fit into this bass' mouth. Note that I'm holding the fish parallel to the front of my body; not at arm's length towards the camera. BTW How heavy were those fish in your avatar? Quote

The other fish was caught about an hour and a half later. She was nearly 4" longer but only weighed one more pound. That is my PB and was caught, January 2005 below Pickwick Dam on the Tennessee River. 8-) Quote

It's really hard to judge a fish by a photo. I'd agree with others on the ballpark size of that fish. Carry at least a measuring tape with you. Here's a table that offers weights for length for average condition bass. Each half inch can make a big difference, especially with larger bass. I realize you probably weighed those two bass (they are beautiful BTW) so I believe you but think you're erring on the light side with this one. This is not a BassResource.com rule, but simple courtesy. On the other hand, if someone asks "How much does it weigh?" then GAME ON! I realize pictures can be misleading, making fish bigger than they are or in many cases, smaller. So, having seen a few fish and pictures over the years, my guess is less than others, but that doesn't make it right! 8-) Quote

I will say I'd trade my LMB in for a SMB (they are SMB aren't they?) half the size of the ones you got there. Fight would be twice as good IMO. Cheers. Quote
