Hello fellas,

New to site here (nice place BTW) although been bass fishing for 25 years now. I caught the LMB below in a private lake in Georgia on a plastic worm but didn't have a scale with me or a measuring tape. I stand 6' 1" and as you can see I'm doing my best to hold it parallel to my body for scale and NOT extended out towards the camera. By measuring from the middle of my collarbone to the top of my thigh, I figure she was approx. 24" long. Can you guys help me out and venture a guess as to what you think she weighs?

On a side note, I caught this beauty on Father's Day in front of my two kids and I did release her. :)

I would guess between 4 and 5 pounds.

Huh?

3lbs is a stretch.

2.5 - 3 lbs

Most 5 lb largemouth bass have a mouth that an average size man can fit his fist into, seriously.

id go 3lbs or a little over.

And me being 6' 1" 205 lbs I'm above average and trust me when I say that my fist could easily fit into this bass' mouth. Note that I'm holding the fish parallel to the front of my body; not at arm's length towards the camera.

BTW How heavy were those fish in your avatar?

The fat one is the hardest fighting freshwater fish I have ever caught, she weighed in just over 7 lbs. The other fish was caught about an hour and a half later. She was nearly 4" longer but only weighed one more pound. That is my PB and was caught, January 2005 below Pickwick Dam on the Tennessee River.

Photos, because of the way lenses work, distort the image -much more than you might realize. It's really hard to judge a fish by a photo. I'd agree with others on the ballpark size of that fish.

Carry at least a measuring tape with you.

Here's a table that offers weights for length for average condition bass.  Each half inch can make a big difference, especially with larger bass.

Length Weight Source: American Fisheries Society

8 in.      5 oz.

9 in.      7 oz.

10 in.      9 oz.

11 in.  11 oz.

12 in. 14 oz

13 in. 1 lb. 3 oz

14 in. 1 lb. 7 oz

15 in. 1 lb. 13 oz.

16 in. 2 lb. 4 oz.

17 in. 2 lb. 12 oz.

20 in. 4 lb. 9 oz.

21 in. 5 lb. 6 oz.

22 in. 6 lb. 4 oz.

23 in. 7 lb. 3 oz.

While I know that physical size doesn't always translate into weight, I'm finding it hard to believe you think my fish is 3lbs or under and the two you're holding are somehow twice as heavy yet are not as big lengthwise. I realize you probably weighed those two bass (they are beautiful BTW) so I believe you but think you're erring on the light side with this one.

Mental Note: don't stand next to roadwarrior at the urinals :P

Now that's kind of what I was expecting. This fish is approx 24" in length and may be off by 1/2 inch at most. It isn't what I would call fat but it IS healthy. Went out last night and bought a scale and measuring tape for the tackle box.

Thanks

Eddie Munster,

It was not my intention to insult you. The question was "How much does it weigh?"

A suggestion I have made on several occasions is this:

If someone posts a picture and states a weight that they weighed on a scale, that's it and comments should be "congratulations" or just move on. This is not a BassResource.com rule, but simple courtesy.

On the other hand, if someone asks "How much does it weigh?" then GAME ON!

I realize pictures can be misleading, making fish bigger than they are or in many cases, smaller.

So, having seen a few fish and pictures over the years, my guess is less than others, but that doesn't make it right!

No offense taken bud. 8-)

Trust me when I say (and it's seems likely that most men would feel this way) I had my mind made up before I made the post and was just feeling out the community. 25+ years of LMB fishing and that scale Paul Robert's was kind enough to post has been my rule of thumb. 12" = 1 pound 16" = 2 pounds etc......

I will say I'd trade my LMB in for a SMB (they are SMB aren't they?) half the size of the ones you got there. Fight would be twice as good IMO.

Cheers. :)
