Justin Mahaney Posted June 19, 2008 Posted June 19, 2008 I woke up this morning at 5:30 to go fishing on Rice lake Located south of peterborough Ontario Heres a link for some information about Rice Lake, It does have constant fishing pressure which makes it tough at times, but with the right baits and presentations you can get great results, which is why its been a main-stay for many tournament trails in canada. Including the CFT, B.a.s.s Masters, ect. << www.ricelakeinfo.com >> << www.ricelakecanada.com >> Managing to get to the water by 6am. My original plan was to throw a soft jerkbait (berkleys realstix shad imitation) in the shallows and hope for a somewhat top water action, but nothing wanted to take it. So I looked to my right and noticed a Large concrete shoreline (concrete drop off) I than added some weight to the jerk bait by using a traditional tube head inside the jerkbait, I than decided to crawl the jerkbait almost like a tube than Wham! Caught myself some real nice smallmouth. I than continued along my favourite top water stretch " The Cedars" and caught a Mammoth off of a Cavitron Buzzbait Check out some of the pictures -Check out the concrete drop, Anybody home? ;D http://img75.imageshack.us/img75/3797/4891415681330qe4.jpg - This Fat Smallie was home and devoured berkleys realstix jerkbait. (shad pattern) http://img365.imageshack.us/img365/8859/4891428865330uf6.jpg - Another decent bronzeback after the Jerkbait, this one a little further down shoreline http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/2651/4891483009330il7.jpg Time for some Topwater Cedar Trees - Someone wanted a side order of Buzzbait http://img75.imageshack.us/img75/5808/4876496129330ev2.jpg - Mmmm more Buzzbait to go around http://img75.imageshack.us/img75/9300/4891444993330pn5.jpg Anyways I wanted to stay out longer but after 3 hours or so and almost 8 decent fish the trolling motor died on me :'( thats what you get for forgetting to charge batteries. Owell, its not big deal. The lake is only 30 seconds away from the house, So We'll see what tommorow brings > Quote
Numpty Posted June 19, 2008 Posted June 19, 2008 Be careful on Rice Targeting Bass for the next couple of weeks... Lots of MNR Officers have been checking. I was checked 3 times in one day. BTW... Nice fish Quote
Justin Mahaney Posted June 19, 2008 Author Posted June 19, 2008 Nice, are you from the Rice lake area? I always practice catch and release, but ofcourse MNR are still very strict about fishing for them this time of year. I usually walleye fish until this time, the eggs have already hatched and 95% of the females are back in deep water for a couple weeks. As long as you release the bass quickly and safely I dont mind spawn-post-spawn bass fishing. Quote
Hooked_On_Bass Posted June 19, 2008 Posted June 19, 2008 Justin Mahaney, Bass season doesn't open until the 4th Saturday in June (the 28th), which isn't until next weekend. It is illegal to target bass until then. Many people get confused with this (or just don't care), thinking that if they practice C&R they are ok, but that is not the case. Here is some info you may want to look at: http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/198219.pdf (Pay particular attention to where it says "Open Seasons" on page 4 of 9). Here is your zone's (17) seasons and limits: http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/MNR_E001336.pdf Quote

If it was two weeks prior, I wouldent have been out. I study the bass in my lake very closely, the fry has hatched. Quote
