Spinnerbait Blues!

I went out the other night for an hour and a half and decided to only use a spinnerbait off points.  I usually fish soft plastics and made myself do this.

I caught a 9" yellow perch, a 12" LMB, a 12" crappie and a 16" pickerel.  Unfortunately, that's the best I've ever done with a spinnerbait.  Still no confidence with this bait.

I guess it's back to soft plastics!

I'm not much on spinnerbaits, mostly because everyone throws them.

However, when the fish are very active chasing bait, there are times

when this is THE lure! What I like is the feeding strike.

Man! That can be something else.

If you want to build confidence, keep fishing them at night. I usually nail fish on a black and blue colorodo almost anytime i go night fishing as long as there is at least a little wind

Try fishing them on windy points and keep the lure in the twilight zone(Just below where you can see it). You should get bit.

ya i agree i love the soft plastics. ive always wanted to catch a bass on a spinerbait but never have. i own a few around 1/4 ounce. and never do i have any luck. im gonna go buy two bran new ones. not sure what color. def colorado blades. maybe a black and blue or chartruese. idk

I never had any confidence in spinnerbaits until last fall.  Here's my advice: start by downsizing, I almost only throw 1/8 oz baits such as Boo Yah Pond Magic spinnerbait, 1/8oz Stanly Wedge's and little Strike King's.  Then start by fishing them shallow.  My favorite and most productive technique is burning them just under the surface.  Alredy this year I've caught the 8 pounder in my avitar, a 4 11 and a bunch around 3.  Trust me, if you stick with it they will most likely become one of you go to's.  Good luck!

Used them a lot when I first started fishing and then they got shoved to a back corner somehow. They can be one of the most versatile of baits! Fish them FAST, fast, crawl, slow, or shallow, mid-depth, deep,or retrieved steady, yoyoed, twitched. All of the above or something you come up with. When you get a strike there is usually no tap tap tap, they slam it.........still wonder sometimes how the got so far back in that corner...

I go through spurts on spinner baits. Sometimes they are the only bait I can get bit on and then I will go months where I can't buy a bite. I agree that this bait defiantly has it's place and time to be used effectively. Don't  give up on it. I used to be the same way on crank baits and I made them my little project this year to learn how to fish them and so far so good. I think next year will be finesse baits.

I'm the same way as harshman on crankbaits, I made them my little project this year, and just like him......so far so good. Now I just need a crankbait rod, cause I've missed about 1/2 the strikes I get on them due to pulling the lure out of it's mouth. Still though, that bass in my avatar fell to a crankbait a couple weeks ago, and it was my first keeper in a few years, so I must be learning.

And spinnerbaits, I'm just like skillet, started out strong on them, fished them every time I went out, but over time I slowed down on them cause they stopped being productive for me (or maybe I fished them too much and lost confidence when they didn't produce). Now I fish one every now and again only. When I do I manage to catch one fish, maybe two, but that's about it. I need to get back into it again, and just as skillet says, when they hit it's no tap, tap, tap.....they just slam it!! That's a heartstopping feeling when your rod about gets jerked out of your hand and you realize your spinnerbait just got blasted.

i am a sucker for spinner baits but have never caught any bass on them. i keep one tied on a spare rod, and do use them some, but i just cant beat the outcome i get with a t-rig worm. dont fix what aint broke

I love fishing for Smallies with spinnerbaits, I'll usually downsize and use a 1/4oz spinnerbait and add a liitle weight, but when they hit, they will hit like a ton of bricks, and if your not paying attention they will rip the rod out of your hands!!! LOL

Spinnerbaits can catch bass in any condition.Yes, lots of guys throw them and the fish see the same colors and retreives day in and day out.I build my own spinnerbaits and use 2 different sizes a 3/8 0z and a 1/2 0z .The colors I use aren't on the rack at bass pro,and also experiment with bigger blade sizes. I use a Colorado or Indiana blade.Also vary the retreive and trying different cadences.Caught lots of fish this year in Maine and here back home ,using a 1/2 0z green pumpkin/brown skirt w' #5 walleye hologram Indiana blade (blood red/gold).I think if you show the fish something they've never seen before ,there going to bite.The spinnerbait is a fish catching machine ,learn to change it up and catch more fish.
