When my HS baseball game was cancelled this morning I decided try out the Pony Pasture section of the James river. I was pumped the whole way there because of the overcast weather and I love catching smallies on topwater, except as soon as I got there the clouds broke and the sun came out >:(

So I switched out my black buzzbait for a 3" GYCB tube on a gammy 2/o superline wide gap hook and an 1/8oz weight, and man did they hammer that little tube. I must have caught 10 keeper fish and 5 or 6 nonkeepers...Nothin better than fat river smallmouth!!!!

This brute was the biggest of the day, I fought him for exactly 4 minutes and 47 seconds...

One of those replies was right... The James River from Rte 288 bridge on down to the Pony Pasture  in Richmond really is beautiful, even in cold weather and some bare trees.  I've been on it maybe 50 times since last June with a jon boat (above the Bosher's dam) or a Native Watercraft 'Ultimate 12'.

Seeing a bald eagle eating a fish in the morning as a crow complains or ospreys being driven from a territory by a bald eagle is something I always saw on TV. In reality, it is much quieter and more beautiful. It almost makes you feel like you are intruding by watching.

But paddling, motoring, and fishing the James is a treasure in our back yard and it is CLEAN of debris for the most part!  Enjoy it while you are healthy and a kayak trip is great exercise!

Thats what I was thinking.  I was reading along and saw baseball game, then topwater smallies.....then looked at the date.

Doh!!

If your catching topwater in Va now then you can just call me Bill Dance!  Lol.  I freakin' wish you could get a smallie to bite anything in this cold northern va weather.  I'm trying this weekend and next weekend but that's just cause I need to get out.  Will be fishing the Rappahannock.  I know rule of thumb is three plus days of 50 degree weather or higher to bring the bite back, today is mid 50's tommorrow high 30s, Sunday high 40's.... egh.  Next week will be better though, high 40's all week, then two days of 50 plus weather on the weekend.  Hopefully I can hook up with a few or manage some bites out there.

I want to catch one of those.... I heard they put up a better fight than largemouths for their size yet they dont get as big.. Too bad we dont have them in San Diego....

You need to hit the colorado river or Diamond Valley, they both have healthy populations of smallies.

YOU MEAN YOU DID NOT GO TO THE LIBRARY AND STUDY?

The game gets cancelled and you go fishing and not to the library with the rest of the team and coaches to study?

BP48, glad to hear you have your priorities straight. ;D

Good job.

Pony Pasture may be waking up after this cold spell ends.

Hey BP48,

I forgot to ask you.

What were you wearing to keep you dry and warm?

I bet the river's water temperature is still c-o-l-d.
