What type of fish is that second one? We dont have those in San Diego:( I wish we did though that thing looks like it would be a good fight. I know its some kind of pike, gar, or muskie but I am just not sure. Again sorry to sound like an idiot not knowing what kind of fish that is but in San Diego we have absolutely NO fish like that whatsoever...

Avid School of Fish Photography grad I see.  The pose and glasses 8-) are there, but the picture is way too clear  ;D ;D

FPB - I believe that is a Gar.  There is two different kinds that I know of ... Needlenose and Alligator.  Google Alligator Gar.  They can get HUGE!!!!!!!!!

Most consider them a nuisance because they compete for the same food as bass.

Nice fish and pictures. That is indeed a gar. I snagged a 47" with a crank across the back about five years ago. The fight was on! I thought it was a floating log and was trying to get a strike from a bass under the log. When he turned I jerked it scared me so bad. You never want to put your fingers anywhere near that mouth.

Does Avid have a twin? :-?

Someone put the gar in the pond.

Can you transfer him safely to a river?

Best surprise I ever had at a pound was  7 pound lady who just had to eat my bait.

Great pics.

Thanks for sharing.

Sam, not sure if I  could Xfer him/her to the river, it would fit in the live well of the boat, but first I'd have to have the live well full & standing by. Don't think that will be an option. Until I caught it, I didn't even know the pond had a resident Gar. Talked to a couple of friends that fish it daily, and they were as suprised as I was.

KU_basser,

That is a gar.  One of seven different types.  We have three of them here in Fl.  The Aligator Gar, state record, 123 lbs. The Longnose Gar, sr 41 lbs and that particular fellow in the picture is a Florida Gar, sr 9.44 lbs.

If you bass fish a lot in Fl, which I do, you catch a lot of them, which I do.  They have a particularly bad attitude and a lot of teeth to go with it.  They ruin many of my favorite jerk baits and just last weekend I got two frogs back to the boat without legs...

congrats on your catches man.  that was cool.  gar are fun, but man do they ever smell bad.  at least the ones around here do.  i can't ever get those suckers out of the boat and back in the lake fast enough.  yuck.
