Posted January 12, 2008 Super User Posted January 12, 2008 my dad's friends brother-in-law landed this baby during the fall striper run in the Chesapeake Bay. it was 48" long and it topped out the (50lb) certified scale at the tackle shop, so we dont know exactly how much it weighed. check it out!!! Guest avid Posted January 12, 2008 Posted January 12, 2008 Oh man, when I lived North I used to love to fish the Inshore waters around Long Island for stripers. Never caught near that size though. Striped bass are among the best eating fish I can remember. No little perch fillets here. these are man sized steaks. Oh Lawdy dem be good eatz Quote

Other. Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 Holy shnitz! That's a monster. Are they good to eat? The small ones are very good to eat. However when they get that size they tend to take on an oily taste. That is a big striper though. Quote

Posted January 13, 2008 Author Super User Posted January 13, 2008 yeah this is one of the biggest ive seen. the Chesapeake is known for its monsters. striper are by far the best fish to eat IMO. i tried largemouth bass once and found that they tasted quite similar to striper. very good, both of them. I have a couple of aquaintences who have caught 50's from my same West coast waters..... but they are exceedingly rare. VABasser Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 Well since we're talking about Chesapeake stripers, heres one I caught a couple weeks ago on my friends dads boat. It was 25 pounds and 38 inches. Pretty fun to bring in. We caught a few of that size that day. Quote

I'm honestly surprised the tackle shop scale only went up to 50lbs. 50lb stripers aren't common but they're hardly unheard of. There have been stripers electroschocked in the bay up to 92lbs in the last 12 years or so. It'd be pretty aggravating if someone was trying to certify a record. Quote

It'd be pretty aggravating if someone was trying to certify a record. not sure if you know of it but the tackle shop was called "The Tackle Box" and im not positive that the scale went up to 50lbs. im pretty sure it was 50 though, might have been 60. but i am positive that the fish maxed out the scale Quote
