hey y'all.  i was able to get out alittle while today.  temp in 40's and water temp about 49.  started by catching 4 approx. 1-2 pounders on a deep wood edge with the jig.  sun came out and warmed up the shallows and i noticed some bait activity in a shallow cove.  proceeded to catch about 4 more 1-2 pounders in 3-4 ft. of water cranking a 3/4 oz. trap over a grassbed in a cove.

when that played out, i went back out deep and caught some more keepers on the deep wood edge.  about 3:30 the wind died and i remembered tin2win's reminder to use a lighter jig if possible.  well i switched to a 1/4oz. jig and with only a few minutes before i had to leave, i got a solid thump.  HAMMER TIME!  drilled 'er hard and after a spunky fight had this nice lil' 5-7 chunk in the boat.  thanks tin2win for your cool tip!  i dedicate this piglet to you. ;D

Thanks Mr.Caller, like I said, it really doesnt need to be smaller, it just needs A SLOWER FALL. You dont need a bitsy flip or anything like that, you can use a full size 1/4oz and it will do the trick. ;) And I messed around a lot more this year with different jig weights and fall ratios, and it seemed like they fish would always hit a 1/4 oz. Might just have that perfect fall rate :-?   And it is definatley the best choice for h2o under 60* imo. Unless you are fishing deep.

yeah i agree buddy.  usually "downsize" is not in my fishin' vocabulary.  ;D  i didn't use anything smaller, it was just way lighter than the 5/8 oz. i was using.  it was a full-size 1/4 oz. rattleback jig.  now i just need a more sensitive rod to feel it better with.  suggestions for christmas? ;D  i woulda fished it all day if the wind hadn't been blowing earlier.  you're right though about the slow fall rate being the key.  man it takes some patience to fish that little sucker though!  but obviously well worth it.  i honestly don't think i woulda caught that fish on the heavier one. thanks again for reminding me. :)

Rod, I got a 6'9" MH Carrot Stick for pitching and 7'3" for open water jigs/ footballs. I'll give you a review soon... like 3-5 months.

paul,

carrot stix are supposedly good rods...everyone that has them likes them...but i havent heard any true "field tests" from them yet (unless i missed a thread :-/)

st. croix avids are a good standby for a rod that is not gonna break the bank, and is very sensative. many people here vouch for them. i have 2 of em but havent had a chance to use them yet. i'll let ya know how i like them come spring time:)

in the world of rods, you get what you pay for, so youre gonna have to be willing to put down a nice bit of cash if you want good rods.

good luck!
