Guest avid Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 No matter how many years you've been bass fishing, there are still firsts for us all. Today, for the first time ever, I broke a rod on a hook set. Of course it happened to be my favorite rod. My St. Croix EC66MHF You can see from the photo that the bass was only about a pound or so. Braided line? I dunno, I have caught much bigger bass on this rod with no problem. It didn't get caught in the truck door or anything, so I expect St. Croix will replace it. I'll keep y'all up to date on what they tell me. Here is a little bigger bass I caught earlier on the same BPS 10" worm and the St. Croix rod. I caught another one on that worm, then missed a biggun on it. I had to switch to my GLX783C and it may have been a tad light for the big worm. Any way the bass was hooked but after he came unbuttoned I could see that the penetration wasn't very deep. I already miss my MH St. Croix. best jig and worm rod I ever owned. Based on my past experience with St. Croix customer service, I expect them to do the right thing. If all goes smoothly I should have my new rod in time for the spawn. Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted December 4, 2007 Super User Posted December 4, 2007 I I could see that the penetration wasn't very deep. Hate it when that happens...... Sorry about your loss. I have the 7' M/H legend tournament St.Croix in MINT condition if you want to buy it cheap. I'll put the $ towards another Loomis. I can bring it to the get together at Okeeheelee if you want to look at/use it. Quote
Evan Pease Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 I hope it works out, Ive got a TD rod that I miss... Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 You wore it out man! I guess the shoulders ok,lol Quote
Guest avid Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 You wore it out man! I guess the shoulders ok,lol Yeah!!! I guess that's the good news. Bassin' Blvd. - Thanks for the offer. I fully expect St. Croix will replace the rod. I have a Legend Tournament casting rod. the 6'8" MXF. I use it for it crankbaits, and buzzbaits. Perfect for those applications, but for wormin, I like the sensitivity I get with the Legend Elite. Plus it has the ideal balance of power and action for my worming pleasure. I kid you not, this is my favorite rod, so I'll be wanting the exact same thing. Quote
Troutfisher Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 Excellent job! Keep up the bassing! Just because we don't have year round bass fishing, grumble grumble. Quote
Super User flechero Posted December 4, 2007 Super User Posted December 4, 2007 Too bad about the rod. Sometimes it's a freak little nick that can trigger it. I'm sure St. Croix will replace it. Did it sound like an explosion or just a cracking sound? I had one break while stress testing a single foot guide set up that was as loud as an M-80! My ears rang for a good while. ...lol Quote
Super User fourbizz Posted December 4, 2007 Super User Posted December 4, 2007 EASY KILLER! No need for the "as seen on TV" hookset with braid. but then again i did blow one up with braid this year too, but you could have fit your fish in her mouth... sideways. LOL. Hopefully they will take care of you and not give me the same schpeal ( <----how do you spell that word? ) that lamiglas did. " We can sell you one at our "guide" price" f'ers. Quote

George Welcome Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 I have broken every type of high end rod out there, and most times the fish isn't over three pounds. The higher end modulus all have thin walls and if the fish is running away when you set the hook: POP! Quote
Guest avid Posted December 5, 2007 Posted December 5, 2007 I have broken every type of high end rod out there, and most times the fish isn't over three pounds. The higher end modulus all have thin walls and if the fish is running away when you set the hook: POP! And that's kinda the sound it made. :-[ Well more like a crack. Broke pretty clean as you can see from the pick. I sent it off to St. Croix today. They make it real easy. You can go to their website and buy a discounted FedEx (sorry Russ/matt) label. you can even order a home pickup if you want. I had an old shipping tube, put the $10.00 fedex label on it and dropped it off at the pak mail store. They make it about as easy as you could want. Quote

michbass Posted December 5, 2007 Posted December 5, 2007 ouch. Never had the pleasure to break a rod with a fish yet. I am just jealous that you get to use your rods this time of year. Can I come down for a visit? Quote
Terry_ Posted December 6, 2007 Posted December 6, 2007 Sounds like the result of the little known " Ninja Warrior Hookset ". Quote
