BassFishingMachine Posted October 1, 2007 Posted October 1, 2007 I was throwing a White/Chartreuse Booyah Spinnerbait with a Zoom White Swim Chunk trailer today, and I managed to catch 4 little bass, biggest was probably 13inches. Then as I walked down the lake making casts here and there I hooked into something that was putting up a hell of a fight. At first I thought it was a real nice bass, then it started taking out drag, and runnin, stopping coming in a little, and running with drag again. This time I got a little look at it, and seen it had a yellowish type of color to it. So im like what the hell :-?? I finally get it in after a good 5min battle, and its a 22inch channel cat lol. Never thought I'd catch a channel cat on a bass spinner, especially a good size one. Anyway I then tryed lipping it because from what I thought I heard people say they lip them like a bass. So when I lipped it, it clamped down on my thumb like a friggin vice grip, hurt like a sob so I pulled my thumb out. Then I thought maybe I didn't grab him right, so I try again and BAM he friggin clamps down on my thumb again making me pull it out again, this time drawing a little blood hah. So I guess your not suppose to lip them? Anyway I probably wont try it again . Quote
tkoglin Posted October 2, 2007 Posted October 2, 2007 so I try again and BAM he friggin clamps down on my thumb again ;D LOL ;D Funny stuff Quote
FivePoundBluegill Posted October 2, 2007 Posted October 2, 2007 That is one reason why I always take a landing net with me when fishing. Also I have caught them fishing for bass on worms and got one about a month ago on a senko. They are realy fun to catch. Sometimes I target channel cats specifically with dough balls. Quote
BassFishingMachine Posted October 2, 2007 Author Posted October 2, 2007 Hah I thought you could lip them though? No? Quote
huck Posted October 2, 2007 Posted October 2, 2007 Great report! Sounds like a fun fight, sorry about the thumb! Quote
Lightninrod Posted October 3, 2007 Posted October 3, 2007 I caught a 3-4 lber on a Chatterbait last year. I believe the best way to hold a 'cat' is to slide your thumb and forefinger under the fins near the gills and grip it with that hand. Just don't get finned! Dan Quote
BackOnTheWater Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 I've caught (or seen caught) cats on t-rigs, rat-l-traps, spinnerbaits, crankbaits, stickbaits, and even on pop-r's. A cat in the right mood will hit anything. And I lipped one once...ONCE...darn near lost my thumb. And they have spines on those fins that will make you cry for your mother! I net them and use my needle-nose pliers...I'm not gonna let them slime up MY boat! Quote
MattDPVN Posted October 12, 2007 Posted October 12, 2007 I lip em......with a glove on. I do though, its just easier. Quote
Infidel. Posted October 12, 2007 Posted October 12, 2007 Way to go there I lip em bare handed and it does tear you up a bit but not bad enough to stop me from doing so. Quote
