ksbasser Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 I was fishing last weekend when I hooked a large bass. I got a good look at the fish and she appeared to be in the 8-10 lb range. I only had her on the line for a few seconds and she was gone with a splash. I thought she spit the bait but on closer inspection the hook on my original brand chatterbait, chatterfrog had snapped at the bend. There was no visible damage to the hook and I have never bent and straightened it or anything like that. These are not cheap baits but it apeers that they use cheap hooks to build them. I had 15 lb line and drag was set to half that. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted October 14, 2008 Super User Posted October 14, 2008 Try the Strike King Pure Poison. Quote
tyrius. Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 I lost a chatterfrog on a cast because the eye broke off that holds the jighead onto the blade! I only casted it about 10 times too! Last one of those that I have purchased. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted October 14, 2008 Super User Posted October 14, 2008 The Chatterfrog is not an original Chatterbait production, it was made after the original company was sold. Since then the quality has gone substantially downhill. The original Chatterbaits were of top quality, I still have a few. Quote
kikstand454 Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 i havent had a problem with my chatterbaits, but i pefer the strike king pure poison. Quote
Super User Munkin Posted October 15, 2008 Super User Posted October 15, 2008 From a tacklemakers perspective the chatterbaits I own are the poorest quality available Just about everything could be improved on. Allen Quote
TruflShufl Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 yea I've had the eye/blade come detached. Crummy quality. I'd use the sk pure poisons Quote
BassFishingMachine Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 My opinion on the original chatterbait is the action of the bait and hits it gets are better then any other chatterbait I've used. Although it is made very cheap(though it doesn't sell cheap :-?), and the hook is pretty crappy. But the action is great.. so I still use them, but I only use black/blue and only fish with them at night. Its not a bait I'd like to rely on due to the crappy quality, so I limit my use of it to a hour or 2 during the dusk/night. Quote
guitarkid Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 I am glad that I am not the only one who thought that the hooks on these looked really cheap and just plain bad. -sm Quote
MattStrykul Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 I have experienced the blade breaking off from the head but other than that nothing with the hooks besides how DULL they are : Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted October 17, 2008 Super User Posted October 17, 2008 I've been using the Chatterfrog quite a bit lately. I've had no trouble with the hooks. The snap is another matter. It will open from time to time. Whether it happens when it snags a rock, or catches a fish, I'm not sure. But I started looking at the snap after every few casts. In three hours of fishing, it opened somehow, three times. The fix was easy. I bent the catch over with needle nose pliers so it could not open. I did lose one lure when the baitcaster backlashed. The line stopped, the lure kept going. When I cleared the tangle and reeled the line in, the snap was still there, open and bent straight. Since the snap is not used for changing lures, I have taken the precaution of bending the end over. No more snap problems. All that being said, I am partial to Strike King products. I will have to check out the "pure poison". Quote
Handy Posted October 17, 2008 Posted October 17, 2008 When they became more available I bought a handfull. And at first they did produce some fish but it didn't take long and no more bites. Since then they got the boot and are no longer in my normal tackle box. I never had anything come apart on them but the hooks were very dull and needed immediate care. If I were to buy a chatter type bait now it would be the strike king version. Paul Quote
