Super User Sam Posted August 25, 2007 Super User Posted August 25, 2007 I have been very concerned that the one, two and three pound bass at my favorite local pond have been harvested by some of the fishermen who do not practice catch and release. So this morning, August 25, I went to the pond at 6:30 AM and threw a Pop-R and caught three small bass and lost one of the larger bass (probably a pound to a pound and a half), which made me feel good knowing that some of the larger bass were still there. I then started to catch the small 8 to 10 inch bass, as I have done for the past three weeks, with no big fish being caught. I was throwing a wacky rigged Mocassin Blue finesse worm with a 2/0 weedless hook. To find out if the bluegill and bream population was still in good condition, I threw my one inch, grape flavored white grub on a 1/64 jig head using 4 pound line on my ultra light rig. To my amazement, I caught one of the two or three large females that llive in the pond. She was hooked right behind the top lip bone and I played her for about 2 minutes, letting her take line and just go back and forth right under the water's surface. I thought I had a catfish until I got to see her near the end of the fight. She was worn out and all I had to do was pick her up out of the water by the lower lip, remove the hook, measure her on the dock, and then release her back into the pond. Can you believe that with all the Senkos, finesse worms, spinnerbaits, crankbaits, buzzbaits, Chatterbaits and Rooster Tails I caught her on a one-inch white grub with a 1/64 ounce jig head that I got in the fly fishing section of BPS? Amazing. Just amazing. So today started out great. I am going to the Redskins preseason game tonight and I hope the good luck holds true for the I-95 traffic to and from the game. Quote

Davis Posted August 29, 2007 Posted August 29, 2007 I get happy too when I see one of the fat girls again ;D. I have the same guys at my pond, lucky me >. Me too. Now I have nothing but respect for the Amish Community and there ways but come on!!!! Do you really need to take all the bass that you catch so your family can eat? Isn't corn and cabbage enough? Fortunately they fish with night crawlers most of the time so the bluegill are a pain for them. But the Amish pretty much have killed a small lake where I started fishing this year. I thought I was just sucking at fishing there but low and behold I went there own morning and there were about 10 lines out from the bank and all Amish fishing. People than told me that if you want LMB this isn't the place for them because the Amish fished all the monsters out. :'( Man that makes me mad. Especially when it could be a gem for LM fishing. Or there is the guys that go up to Zoar Valley at this one LMB pond that the DEC is getting back together. It is a Catch and Release Pond and people still take them out of there. Ticks me off. The only thing you can do is report it. Quote
Super User Sam Posted August 29, 2007 Author Super User Posted August 29, 2007 Davis, Do the Amish have to have a valid state fishing license? If so, report them to your game and inland fisheries department and they will come out and ask for the licenses and run them off. This works better when there are illegals fishing. This is how we drove them out of the James River as they were harvesting the beautiful flathead catfish. Just a suggestion to consider. Quote

I hope that came out wrong... I don't know you but I can't think you meant it as it sounds. That's actually some of the most racist thinking I've ever seen posted here on BassResource.com. Fish were put here for our consumption. Recreational considerations were a few thousand years later. Lets at least give other people the benifit of the doubt. Not too many amish executives out there pulling 6 figure salaries, they might really need those fish for the table. They won't get all the fish, so use that pond/lake as a place to sharpen your skills. Surely you can outfish cane poles and worms? Maybe we should use cane poles and worms if they took all the "monsters" out... Is it a public lake? Maybe the Amish are mad at you for invading their favorite fishing spot.... they probably think you should go elsewhere, you throw them back, they need dinner. Just a thought. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted August 30, 2007 Super User Posted August 30, 2007 All right, here is the deal.: If they are doing anything illegal, report them and follow-up. If not, get over it and find somewhere else to fish. Keeping fish is NOT illegal and you (we) have no control over that. Quote
Ballpark Frank Posted August 30, 2007 Posted August 30, 2007 That's cool Sam, I've caught some of my biggest when I was targeting bluegill and bulheads. One of my favorite places to fish was ruined and posted due to illegals. It was a long stream with rock bottom, that held alot of sunfish(bluegill, pumpkinseed, warmouth, etc.) spotted bass, and a few smallmouth. The stream is lined with cotton fields for miles, so I wouldn't think of eating anything that came out of it. My friends and I primarily fly-fished the stream and returned everything back to the water. We did a monthly clean-up of garbage left by others and the landowners never had a problem with us using the fields to park. A couple of years later, the stream became a fishing haven for illegals. They kept everything, I mean even 3" bluegills. They tore up the landowners fields and left enough garbage that we had to start cleaning up weekly. We had the gamewarden out a few times but to no avail. The landowner finally got feed up and posted "no trespassing" and "no fishing". They would not give anyone permission, they told us "if we let you, then they all will come back". The fishing had dropped off to virtually nothing, rarely anything but big minnows were caught. This entire thing happened in 3 months. My friends and I are hoping that whatever fish were left will multiple and rebuild the stream in a few years, and maybe we can deal will the landowners after a resting period. Quote

I wave to them all the time and actually carry on conversations with them. My point is that there pulling a ton of them out of this small lake. Like RW says, I don't fish there anymore because there is nothing of size there now. Mostly bullhead and bluegill. I don't hate the Amish, I just hate that they pull everything out of there and never catch and release. Believe me there not starving. Maybe my word usage came out wrong, and I apologize for that. Thats a big pet pieve of mine when people don't respect there fishery. The amish do just fine down in my parts. Probably make more money off there lumber than most people in the area. To call me a racist or suggest that I'm being racist is a little judgemental don't ya think? But as a fellow christian brother I ask that you forgive me because I did not mean for it to sound like it did. I'm far from a racist. The crappy thing is that you can't take boats out. Its only shore fishing. So you can't get deep for them fish. Anyway I hope ya see my point in some way. Stinks trying to type sometimes to try and get a point across. Quote

But a good amount take them home and some are questionably not "legal". Quote
Super User flechero Posted August 31, 2007 Super User Posted August 31, 2007 That's why I started with "I hope it came out wrong" I see why you might be concerned but it just sounded like an Amish bashing. Quote

Yeah re-reading it, it did come off a bit "wrong". Thats why I started with me saying that I respect them. I don't think the DEC stocks bass in there either. Just brownies I believe. Quote
Super User Sam Posted September 3, 2007 Author Super User Posted September 3, 2007 Hey guys, Any people that name their towns Intercourse and Blue Balls are OK with me! ;D I had a magnet on the refrigerator that read "I Love Intercourse" that we got on one of our trips in Penna. My wife finally removed it and I have no idea where it is. Quote
