Me and Triton9 met up at one of our usual spots that has been known to produce some big fish. So we fished for about an hour and a half with high hopes but nothing to show for it but one small keeper. But that all changed when I made a key pitch to a hole in the pads with my t-rigged black/blue GYCB flappin' hog...I felt th bite and swung for the fences...but the fish did not budge, and then she decided to freight train through every possible thick grass clump and pad field. But my 15lb Seaguar InvizX held up and I lipped her at the bank, she weighed about 6lbs and some change.

Needless to say I was pumped about that, but what really got me going was that a couple minutes later I caught 2 keepers in a row and then I made another cast to a little gut into the pads...Again I felt the "tap tap" and again I swung for the fences...she charged through some thick stuff but my Seaguar still held up and I lipped a beautiful 4.5lber...by this time T9 was goin nuts cuz he couldn't get bit to save his life, plus to top off the day he busted one of his flippin sticks setting the hook into another monster fish...

A little while after that T9 slammed his rod back and fought another hard-charging 4lber to the bank. This was the single most productive 2 hours I have ever experienced...but enough talk here's the pics...

4.5lber, she hit a t-rigged black/blue ZOOM speed craw

Man I got a pond that looks just like that 5 mins down the road and it gets NO PRESSURE. I haven't bought a jig rod yet but there are TONS of pads on the left side of the lake where I see BIG fish come up for for baitfish and such. I never can get in the thick of it cause I'm mainly a plastics guy with little experience (started early this summer). However, I'm buying my first rod and braided line primarily for jig fishing sometime in November. Might get a half a month or a full month depending on the weather and if it stays as hot as it did last year in December. How do you fish those pads?

So you can just pitch weedless plastics weightless into those pads too?  I just figured I'd get caught up like crazy if I tried that.  Guess you gotta have a lot of casting accuracy to hit spots dead on like that with those.

Ps:  GYCB are MONEY!

I have tungsten weights and PLENTY of jigs but I mainly fish sparse cover with them. Do you just put it in a hole, hop it right there in one spot wait for a hit then reel in and try another? I know you can catch some big fish with jigs in pads because I was watching the FLW Tour on the Potomac and one guy was getting in the thick of it with a jig and punishing it. Any pointers would be appreciated. My biggest bass is only 2.5lbs so if I caught one of those I'd probably faint. Those are some NICE fish guys. Good job out there. Way to find a hole and really kill it.

Oh yeah man, get yourself a nice stout MH or Heavy action rod with either braid or heavy fluorocarbon and get right into the thick stuff. I mainly pitch and flip texas rigged plastics because they are easier to punch through the cover with IMO but you have to make sure you have a stout hook like a Gamakatsu superline wide gap hook. And don't worry about getting hung up, if you pitch a weedless plastic or jig in there you should have no problem with hangups.

When you pitch it in there, let it sit for a good 8-10 seconds then pick it up and give it a little shake, then hop it, then shake it some more. If that doesn't get bit then reel it up and pitch again, remember to fish each pad, root, and grass clump very thoroughly as you can pull multiple fish from one spot with this technique.

Another thing to remember is when you feel a bite, reel up the slack, and slam that hook back like your trying to rip the lips right off the fish's face. And once you stick the fish and get him coming towards you, don't stop reeling and try to keep his head up so he doesn't get all hung up in the thick stuff.

Flipping grass and pads is my favorite way to catch fish and it can be very effective, so give it a go

Thanks alot for the tips basspro.  Hopefully with your tips and knowledge on the subject and with my new gear next spring I can try and add a new technique to my arsenal and start to pull up bigger fish.  I really appreciate you taking the time to throw in your two cents on the things I need and should know to get started fishing this way.  Later bud.  Hope to see more great catches of yours like that in the future.
