What knots do you guys use for buzzbaits!? I just lost 2 Cavitrons to a big ol' bass in my lake. He ate 'em in the same place 2 times and snapped my line both times. Seen him a minute later leap outta the water with them lodged in his mouth trying to spit em out! I hope he gets them out and doesn't die. :'(

I'm using Suffix Siege 10lb test and an Improved Clinch Knot i believe it's called. Can you tie a Palomar with these? Any illustrations?

I think the biggest problem is the line. That stuff is junk, which is of course subject to interpretation.

I have been tying a clinch knot my whole life and never had a problem. Be sure to wet it and pull it slowly together.

sounds like you are not tying the knot correctly b/c I have used the knot you are talking about using and lose very few fish from line break. If your drag is set properly and you line break you should get somone to double check your knots before hand.

You can tie a Palomar, you just need a reall big loop to go over the buzzbait.  I tie a hangmans noose but some people have told me that isn't a good knot to use but I don't ever think I've lost a buzzbait to that knot except once.  And that was when the line got snagged in a bush behind me, I didn't check the line and on the next cast the buzzbait kept right on going.  But I do like that knot. It pulls tight and does not slide up and down the arm of the bait.

BTW, are you sure it's your knot that's letting go and not just your line breaking.  Check for nicks or maybe you just have a bad spool of line.

If your knot is letting go, slipping, the end of the line would probably be all kinked and curled. If breaking off, it would be straight or maybe a little hook

Thanks a lot guys! I had just tied on both of them, so I'm pretty sure it wasn't the line as I've had this spooled on for a little while already with no problems before. The end was definitely kinked and curled. I've been using it for a while and I like it pretty well, but maybe I'll have to use a heavier line or another brand... Thanks again guys!

Can anyone come up with a diagram or something for me showing how to tie a Palomar on a buzzbait? I don't understand how it works, heh... ;)

I use at lest 12lb for top water, but 14 is perfect for me! I use a uni knot for mono, great knot, much stronger than the improved clench!!

"big ol bass" and 10 lb test (of any brand) seldom mix harmoniously.  Fwiw, I tie a palomar and use #14 XT on my buzzbait rod.

I use the palomar knot,

I use 10lb Suffix "Siege" an have never had a fish break loose because of the knot. I use to have the same problem with the fishermens an would loose lures after multiple cast.

Give the Palomar a shot, it's strong as well as quick to tie on.

Go to the Reel Mechanic's web site and he has diagrams on how to tie a Palamor Knot.

I use the Palamor all the time on all baits and my knot failure has dropped to almost zero.

Be sure to wet the knot BEFORE you start to pull the line end snug and then wet it again when you pull the tag end snug.

Pull tag end after you pull the line snug.

Then, pull the knot tight.

Watch for line burn when the line becomes curled.  If the lne curles, then retie.

And check your knot after every three fish and retie if necessary.

And follow the advice on using your thumb nail to check for any knicks or cuts in the line above the hook.  ;)

Much appreciated guys! When using the palomar in this situation on a buzzbait, am i supposed to bring the loop around the entire bait? Or just do it around the head and hook shank or the blade part? Any difference?

Still waiting till I can afford a dedicated buzzbait rod... Oh, how I need one...

I use the palomar knot all the time on my buzzbaits. I throw it on 14# Suffix Elite with no problems. The only thing I use 10# test for is crankbaits. If you're throwing it, well any lure for that matter, around alot of cover be sure to check your line for nicks and retie if you find one. Sounds to me like that's where your problem was.

I've had no problems with the Improved Clinch Knot.  I've been fishing it for 23 years, and the only lures I lost  were ones where I knew the line was nicked up and fished it without re-tying... Salt water or fresh, I never use another knot.

I think issues with any knot are usually traced back to technique.  That said, different brands and line material seem to have issues with certain knots.  I don't like improved cinch knots with either Suffix nylon, Elite and Siege, and would use either a Palomar, or if swinging the bait through the loop is too difficult, a Uni knot.  I'd also jump up to 12# or heavier.  On my spinner/buzzbait rods, I use 12-15# P-Line CXX X-tra Strong, and improved cinch knots hold just fine.  They are super fast to tie on the water, and I generally retie about every ten casts or every fish  On braid, I've switched to Uni knots almost exclusively, after having some minor issues with the Palomar - probably my problem in this case, since so many others have good luck with this knot.

That was one decision I have not ever regretted, even for a second.   ;)

FIVE- Nothing but nothing gets me or better yet got me madder than losing a good fish because  of a knot or something else that we as fishermen have control of.There are certain things that happen while fishing that are totally out of our hands . KNOTS are a factor that we have control over. The only knot I tie is the Polomar knot. In my younger day I would tie that clinch- cinch knot. I lost a lot of big fish with that knot.  As for your question-Cavitrons -you can use a polomar knot on-. You will be glad ya did.

Thanks a ton guys! I normally use the Palomar on everything else, but I just couldn't figure out how to tie it onto the buzzbait. I think I've figured it out though...

Now it's time to get some heavier line and start saving for another rod! ;)

You can tie a palomar without a lure tied on. This is how.

Take a good amount of line. (about 8-9" maybe more)

Double it.

Tie an overhand knot (like the start of a shoelace) but, just start it and leave it loose.

Take the tag end loop and reach through with your thumb and forefinger.

Grab the doubled loop. (this is where your lure would usually be)

Pull it through the tag loop. (all the while always holding onto the the main line)

Once you have it pulled through, spread your thumb and finger to open the double loop.

Drop your buzzbait or spinnerbait through.

Wet and tighten.

It is so hard to explain but, so easy to show and do.

Former Bassmaster Classic Champ Bobby Murray showed this at a seminar years ago. Been doing it ever since.

Those big ol' bass are strong and can flat out break mono line in a heartbeat....... plus if they don't break the line they probably will get down in some junk and you can't haul em out.......

Switch to Powerpro Braid 30 lb on your baitcasters and 10 lb. on your spinning reels.........  BE SURE AND TIE A DOUBLE PALAMOR KNOT WITH THIS LINE OR THE KNOT WILL COME LOOSE........

A double palamor knot is easy to tie once you try it a few times.... go to youtube.com to learn how to tie it............ ;)

Many of us have used mono with buzzbaits (and EVERY other application) trouble free for over 20-30 years. Using adequate lb test mono is just fine.

I will agree that braid has some good qualities, however, it's not magic, and certainly not for everyone.

Yeah that's just my opinion...... unless your into catching really big bass mono is just fine........

I've got into a few this year that broke me off, or pulled me down into the slop...  got into trees, etc....

If you've gotta stick with Mono go with at least 17 lb. test line............

I am using 12lbs mono and the palomar knot and have not had any issues and I have caught some nice fish on Cavitrons.

Later, ;)
