The last few weeks have been sucky! My boat had been out of commission for the last month, so I have been stuck banking, float tubing, or bumming rides with buddies. Work has sucked, I had no boat. My state of mind was not good ;)

I got my boat back on the water and went to a lake that I don't even like! It doesn't make alot of sense, but it seemed like the place to go. I went by myself which I really enjoy. I get all my own jokes, never back boat  myself, and can pass gas in peace :D

I decided to commit to big baits all day, which is dumb because it is the middle of summer. After three hours I had 0 bites >:(. In my mind though, i was just happy to be out, in my boat, doing what I wanted. I just told myself that it was one of those skunk trips I have to endure. You got to have alot of those when you're a swimbaiter and you suck like me ;D

About 5 minutes after I made peace with that little realization, I got a bite.....

8-11.jpg

8lbs 11ozs.

It was cool because when she bit, i set the hook and missed her, but as soon as my bait stopped after the set, she ate it again! in the words of fish chris WOOO HOOO!

I then came home, had a HUGE steak, a couple of frosty brews, and "wrestled" with the girlfriend. It was a mighty fine day.  I am leaving for the lake in 45 minutes ;)

Attaboy Jay!  What a great fish.  That thing looks WAY bigger than 8lbs.

It sounds like a mighty fine day indeed  :)

Hey Biz.... The mindset ! I couldn't agree more ! :-)

I think a lot of people would trip on me, if they saw how much I just sit there, looking around, not even casting, but rather, just taking in my surroundings. People might think, "but your wasting time"..... In reality though, I'm brainstorming again. Just trying to get into my "thinking like a fish" mode :-)

It's one thing (and not neccessarily a bad thing) to just work your but off, until you put one in the boat, but it's quite another to "think a big one into the boat" ! I guess it's best to balance these two aspects. But I find that the more times I've been around this block, the less I tend to work (physically), and the more I tend to think......

Anyway, congrats on the nice catch :-)

Stay on em',

Huh?

Nice fish.

You Cali boys are SOOOOOOOOOOO spoiled... 8-)

p.s. Check your scale. It's not often someone posts a weight 30-40% on the LOW side!   ::)

Yeah, I'm developing a new kind of fish story. Just say that the fish weighed less than it actually did! Its really quite groundbreaking ;D :P

RW,

What I mean is that it is not at all a high percentage gig. Our water temps are in the low to mid 80's right now. Not exactly ideal conditions for trout. Most lakes haven't had a stocking since early june. Generally trout won't survive through the summer. There are exceptions, of course, but mostly trout baits just don't get bit much in the summer during the day. At night, I'll chuck them all the time, but I often feel like i am wasting my time during the day.

The reason I did decide to fish them all day, is that there are some special circumstances involved, that I felt raised my chances of success. I actually went back on Sunday and did VERY WELL, but that story is for sometime later in the future :)

Fish,

I too am not typically a run and gun type fisherman. Sometimes I'll just put my head down and chuck, chuck, chuck, but mostly I try and calculate. Sit down, have a drink and a snack, look around, put something together and follow a plan. Its definitely alot more gratifying when you plan it, and it happens, than when you are just chucking and get a random bite. but thats me. I guess you could say that I would rather be mediocre than just lucky LOL ;D :D

Man! I love fishin!
