Randall Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 I had the pleasure to fish yesterday with the famous Lightninrod. I met him at the ramp around noon and a Varner regular had already recoginized him from his famous fishing reports. He needed no introduction even though he had never been to Varner. So, I was fishing with a celebrity in the world of fishing. We got started and it wasn't long before I had a bite on a trickworm that didn't feel all that big until it started taking drag. We got it in the boat and weighed it at 7lbs 4oz. We are off to a great start since we are just after nothing but big ones. A few minutes later a storm came up and we fished for a while since there was no lightning and got soaked. It looks like the storm will go on by but then we get some lightning. Its not good to be out in an all electric boat in a thunderstorm with big bolts of lightning so we take off toward the ramp. Later I am thinking that it might even be worse since the guy I am fishing with is called Lightninrod. We wait out the storm back at the ramp and get to go back out for a while but the big ones aren't biting. We got a few more small fish but nothing big. Had a good time despite the rain and got to meet and fish with Lightninrod. Quote

Lightninrod Posted July 14, 2007 Posted July 14, 2007 I had a great time(though very wet! ;D) with a great Bass guide. Randall shares all his knowledge of Varner with you as he points out the grass lines, flats, structure, etc. I was amazed at his expertise but I shouldn't have been as we've all seen his Bass pics and they are usually heavier than that 7/4! He truly loves his job and fishes hard though he offered just to watch but I wanted him to fish and catch as I tried to learn a little bit about Varner. I left at 5:30 but he stayed and fished until 7 PM I think and he has a one hour trip home. Varner is a Bass Heaven IMO. We talked with Byron and Tim at the ramp and they too have caught some heavy Bass there. Good Bass talk and a few jabs and jokes were had by all. Byron said he wasn't afraid of a little lightning. I reminded him we had heard him praying as we electric-motored back to the ramp as his boat came alongside Randall's ;D Just wish it wasn't a 2 hour drive and that I had a 3-motor jonboat to fish that lovely lake! Thanks again for a fine trip Randall! Dan Quote
